Scary Sharp knives...
One of the guys at Church turned me onto a really, really neat knifemaker...
Havalon.
As in Havel Scalpel Blades.
These guys are making folding skinners that take their sterile, disposable, "Internal Surgery 400" blades.
Honestly, imagine field dressing your deer with a brand-new STERILE surgical scalpel.
It's absolutely amazing.
The "low end" ones can be had for about $30 (with 13 blades). 24 packs of blades for $9.
And there are more blades than you can shake a stick at: http://www.havalon.com/replacement-blades.html
The Havalon site (Havalon.com) shows the knives, but you can usually find them retail/wholesale cheaper. Still... these things will cut you when you look at them.

Oh may have to get one or two of those. Glad you shared that I hadn't seen those yet.

I keep in my bedroom for on the quick(in case can't get my gun or my Buck general ain't enough-----
http://www.swissknifeshop.com/shop/kitc ... cher-knife
friend this knife actually scares me when I handle it sharpest knife I have ever handled!
They make a 6" skinner.(doesn't need the sharpening steel often either)
But that little unit would work!
Plus they are very reasonable----Thanks!

Heh. My favorite "fighter" is the "Good Chef" brand 4" Utility Knife, available for less than $5 at most grocers...

Got one of these. It'll kill a hog like RIGHT NOW.
No effort.

Re: Scary Sharp knives...
I really like to watch a hunting show called "The Meat Eater", (Steven Rinella) he shows a lot of good stuff on the hunt including the gutting/skinning. I always thought his knives were incredibly sharp, now I know why, he uses the havalon's also.
http://themeateater.com/2012/havalon-piranta/
I might have to get me one of those.

Re: Scary Sharp knives...
The good part of the Havalon knives is that for people who can't sharpen a knife, they always have a sharp blade. For those like RKrodle and Tycer, it might not be any advantage. RKrodle has a knife made from a horseshoing rasp that he keeps sharp enough to shave with, and it holds its edge very well. Havalon are a good idea, but I can't see a need for them.

Re: Scary Sharp knives...
I have the Piranha and another one. One is 3" with orange handle and the other is 1.75" with a blue and black handle. The blades are not interchangeble between the two sizes. One blade will do a deer or an elk skinning. A new sharp blade is needed for caping the same animal - and you have to be extra careful as it is easy to cut through when you don't want to. They are not too good on hogs or bears, the little stud the blade mounts on gets stuck a lot and the crevice fills with "stuff". Also, on a good bear or hog the blade will hardly last the whole skinning job. If you bend the blade or run into a bone they will break farily easily. I keep 3 extra blades in the black cordura sheath plus the one on the knife. I've used them for a year now and for general gutting or skinning I much prefer a good sharp fixed blade or solidly built lockblade knife. For a full skinning and caping job I use the scapels, sometimes in conjunction with another knife. Good gadgets if used properly and gingerly. I'm not going to quit using them just yet, but I do have a lot of blades and another sharp knife on hand with them. One thing for sure, they are super light. The knife, case and 3 extra blades barely weighs 3 and a half ounces.

Re: Scary Sharp knives...
Good knives. Heard about them a while back on one forum or another. I've got them in my various emergency bags and tool bags. If it dull, or breaks, just put on a new blade and keep on keeping on. And heck, some of them even have faux schrimsaw handles.

Re: Scary Sharp knives...
I got the blaze orange handle version (harder to lose). I now keep one in my EMT kit. Definitely not something to pry with but for delicate/precise cutting where a sharpening stick/strop isn't handy they are tough to beat.

A Buck esquire 3" folder ,35 years of guttin. Now for skinning ,caping and puttin up fur, I use a poultry farm butcher fixed blade. The factories discard the used knifes where they find their way to me for a buck a piece. I get them at trappers conventions. Cheap and sharp.

Re: Scary Sharp knives...
Some of the trapping supply hours carry them but you will pay a little more. Don't know what state your in but most have a least one trapping convention annually, where suppliers, factory reps and tailgaters ply their wares.Let me know where your at and I 'll do a search for ya. If you have never been to a convention you will get a kick from it, even if you don't trapMescalero wrote:Foxtrapper ,Can you tell me how to get a couple of those?
