Winchester 94 45/70
Has anyone ever seen or heard of a Winchester 94 in 45-70?
I have a 94 in 450 Marlin, why not a 45-70?

Think the answer first is why??? You mean you have actually a modified 94(1894 Big Bore Line)Winchester????daisygordoninc wrote:Has anyone ever seen or heard of a Winchester 94 in 45-70?

When they already have their 1886 45-70 take down, with 24" octagon barrel.
I think they feel that (1) Those that want a 45-70 want to be able to take advantage of that cartridges total capability.
Like pushing a Speer 350gr bullet @ approaching 2400fps (I don't see where a .450 can do that?)How bout 500gr bullets?
Our how bout a 400 zipping over 2000fps etc.
Those rounds are best suited for a large framed gun(fairly heavy to absorb felt recoil)and with extra barrel length to really take advantage of that round. Plus they also have the extra light version anyway.
Think the designers/higher ups think (they already have the ultimate lever why waste their time on a 94)when there are '"86's" to be had?????????

Re: Winchester 94 45/70
Having lived with the 94s for decades I'm thinking the rim of the .45-70 is so big the internals could not be altered to work with it.daisygordoninc wrote:Has anyone ever seen or heard of a Winchester 94 in 45-70?

Since they did make them in 450 M I doubt it has anything to do with a lack of ability to handle the pressure.

Re: Winchester 94 45/70
Some of the 94s were converted to .444 Marlin but that, IIRC, seems to have been the top end of room for a rim. The .450 Marlin obviates that concern.
Joe, I'm thinking all the .450s were Big Bores, not the Model 94 of old. Am I mis-remembering?

Hobie,
I'm pretty sure you are correct. But not the earlier BB's with the bulging receiver, the later ones made after they went back to the forged receiver.
After all the 450 Marlin came out long after USRAC took over Winchester.

Can you not shoot a .45-70 out of the .450 Marlin? Just not the other way around.

No, you cannot. Neither is interchangeable with the other.Old Time Hunter wrote:Can you not shoot a .45-70 out of the .450 Marlin? Just not the other way around.

To quote Paco Kelly:
At 'Level Three' I hope to see Winchester chamber its Big Bore (fatside) '94 for the .45-70 in the near future. Certainly if the model 94 BB Winchester can take the 444 it can take the .45-70. It's not going to be a simple job for Winchester designers.

It won't fit I don't think, barely fits in a Marlin and Marlins don't use guide rails etc. If they could they would, they did everything else possible with the 94 action.

Touching off a couple of those 'Level Three' loads in a six and a half pound '94 carbine sure would get your attention. Ouch!Friends Call Me Ji wrote:To quote Paco Kelly:

That's the reason the .45-70 never appeared in the M1894/94.94BB action - the .45-70 rim is much too large in diameter for the magazine, mag throat, or action, to handle - and WHY the M94 Timber was chambered for the non-interchangeable .450 Marlin - which has a somewhat smaller H&H-type belted magnum case head ILO the larger .45-70 rim.

Re: Winchester 94 45/70
Yes, all of the above, tho the very basic problem of the action simply not being wide enough for the rim to fit in it is a major abstacle. It would have to be completely re-engineered to be wider, not to mention the other issues.

Re: Winchester 94 45/70
Thanks for the posts on the Winchester 94 45-70 question. I didn't think about the
difference in the rim. I know pressure isn't a problem because my 94 in 450 Marlin
isn't even the BB model. I think the Japanese 94's are pretty good quality at least
most who own them think so. I have a 1892 in 44 magnum, new from Japan, it really
seems to be high quality. Maybe the Japanese makers are getting it right, there are
some who believe these new 94's are even better than the old ones, just very expensive.
