I`d say that will do nicely for a beginner.
I played for several years in the late 60`s to early 70`s , my 5 string was a Framus (sp?), made in Germany. I still have my 12 string Guitar by Framus. Hi grade instrument that my arthritic hands can no longer play.

Sorry to hear ya can`t play anymore bro, the golden years huh.
I`m looking forward to getting it but i`m not very confident i`ll be able to play, music seems for those inclined.

Pitchy, here is an example of clawhammer banjo. This lady has several albums out in both banjo and dulcimer. Clawhammer banjo is considered "old time music" and predates bluegrass. I like it better than bluegrass myself. Playing clawhammer will also allow you to chord the banjo like you would a guitar if you want to sing along.

Don't worry Pitchy, banjo is easy to start and get going on. Hard to master but who does that? Basically you pluck the strings in a pattern to produce the notes. 1st, 2nd, 5th, 1st, 2nd, 5th, 1st, 2nd, 5th...etc.

Then you change chords as you maintain the pattern. You can vary the pattern, vary the chords, etc. But that is enough to get going for a while. Actually a long while. Melodies can come later.

A chord book is a good investment. There used to be a slim one that fit in the long part of the case.

I thought I had a lot of interests but I think you may have more. That's so much about what life's all about! Good to see and read about all of them.

I had one 5-string. Pete Seeger Gibson. Great tone/sound but traded it in on a Vega Tenor banjo w/4 strings. My next one will be a plectrum that is like a Tenor but with a longer neck and more mellow (prettier I think) sound.

If you make some progress with your first 5-string and want to move up in quality and sound you might want to have a very experienced player with you before you spend big bucks. The same brand and model can vary considerably in sound quality and it's not always the most expensive that's the best sounding.

The degree of your love for it will determine your progress. If no like then give guitars a try--unless you already have. I favor the guitar but do like banjos.

I teach and play Bluegrass Banjo for a living. To most of my students, I recommend a used, Deering "Goodtime"
They can be had open back or resonated depending on which discipline.
Highly advise against any oriental aluminum cheepy. They will generally discourage one from playing.
You get what you pay for in Banjo's. The best ones are American made.

Pitchy, don't let them get to ya. The banjo has the most poignant, complex sound of just about any instrument. True it can be noisy in the wrong hands, but that's the responsibility you have taken on.

I doubt is there is much difference in the learning process but a great deal of difference in the sound. Only you can tell me what kind of music you like. No sense learning what you don't want to play.

There's a huge difference. Clawhammer allows one to accompany ones self. Scruggs or 3 finger Bluegrass style is not a solo instrument in the same sense. It's designed to be played with other instruments where your soloing about 10% of the time and doing back-up the other 90%.

Right now I wish it was the two of us in that ice boat with a big coffee pot and griddle on the stove and enough wind to fly faster than it goes. Could the bacon and sausage and eggs taste any better than that?

I've never sailed on ice, but I would surely like to.
