Ha ha. You look pretty good.
I read an article on Gunblast about that rifle, and the author had to cut down some 45-65 brass to make rounds. Did you have to do that or is the ammo readily available.

Re: Chaparral 76 range report and new outfit
Well not real impressed with the turn out but my eyes are so bad that it`s hard to focus on that rear sight.
The 50 yard groups are with the ladder down of coarse.
Tried three shots at 100 with the sight down and it shot way low so tried one shot with the elevator down as far as it would go and it shot way high.
So i filed a u shaped groove in the bottom of the ladder and that shot good as far as elevation.
Probably going to try a different powder as i`m out of 3031 anyway.

Re: Chaparral 76 range report and new outfit
I don't know how I missed this earlier! Love those photos of your rig. That is a real nice coat! I'd be very interested in getting one something like that. Were did you get it?
Been looking at your results. Hmmmm. I expected tighter groups than that, but my first suspicion is that IMR 3031 is just too slow to give you enough pressure spike to bump that bullet up to seal off the throat and bore. I would recommend trying something faster like 5744. I would not recommend IMR 4227 or IMR 4759 ..... the extreme spread of the velocities are way too high, revealing that those two powders are very position sensitive. 2400 is pretty bad. A faster powder produces a sharper pressure spike, which usually improves accuracy. 2400 produces a pressure spike similar to FFg.
It might be interesting to try some black powder loads. Regardless, you will have a lot of fun playing around with that rifle and I am certain that a very accurate load can be found for it.

Re: Chaparral 76 range report and new outfit
IMR 4227 or IMR SR4759 would be fine with some dacron filler, but you should probably reduce the load slightly to compensate for the more efficient burning. They will give you a better pressure spike to bump of that bullet.

I suspect 60 grains or all that will fit with slight compression.

Me, I would cram as much black as I can in there but add a grease cookie under the boolit.
The guts of the gun would be cleaned and soaked in olive oil. The bore cleaned and coated in my BP lube which is beef fat and olive oil n' go shoot.
Keep us posted Pitchy.

Re: Chaparral 76 range report and new outfit
Sure, but don't get hung up on the cleaning. The barrel dripping in olive oil and a pull through n' plenty old rag patches is all thats needed. Once the bore is seasoned with lube like a 22 no need to lose sleepPitchy wrote:Thanks Nath, i think i`ll go back to smokeless and try a different powder, hate that cleaning BP
My musketoon never rots and I use pyro! Have left it loaded for days on a fired barrel.
Damp patches dowe the bore, dryed and then olive oil, dryed again just prior to the next hunt.
Good luck, all the same.

Re: Chaparral 76 range report and new outfit
Ya ya i have a bunch of muzzleloaders that i can shoot and clean if i want but no thanks on the cartridge guns.
See quite a few guys use 4198 powder.
Or i might try the 3031 a little more until i get used to the rifle and break it in.
A guy on cas said he shot a 2 1/2 in group at 100 yards with the same gun as mine, might of been a Uberti can`t remember.

Re: Chaparral 76 range report and new outfit
You need a shorter sight radius. I always shot better with short barreled carbines;20" and under than with standard 22" + rifle barrels when using Irons. worth a try.
Re: Chaparral 76 range report and new outfit
My eyes are so bad close up, can`t focus on the rear sight and that`s why these groups are stringing horizontal.tman wrote:You need a shorter sight radius. I always shot better with short barreled carbines;20" and under than with standard 22" + rifle barrels when using Irons. worth a try.
When i shot the last 100 yard group i was looking through that notch i filed in the sight.
I might have to live with it and i`m not blaming the powder until i have someone else shoot it,

The '76 is doing great. Don't forget aout the all time load using Unique at sub-sonic speeds. In the 45-60, 11 grains will push it about 1100 with a 400 cast---loose in the case.---------------Sixgun

Sixgun pard where`d ya come up with that unique load, is there a lot of air space with 11 grains that could make it dangerous, educate me bro.

Yep it sure enough is heavy but i`ve always been the type that if it`s cool looking it`s better. That`s why we rode choppers, no mind they would bust your butt they were cool.
Now take my Marlin Cowboy, it has a bead front sight and a u shape notch in the rear and i can hit good with it.
Any load info is welcome.

I am loving all these posts.
I wondered about unique loads. Is it safe to fill with anything at all if the powder leaves a lot of air behind the bullet? What is okay to fill with?

I see that 15 grains is a common load in the 45-70.
I`m going to go see how much space is left in the case using 11 grains of unique.
Checked, lots of air, gotta have more info

Pitchy, Throw a 94 with a 20" and a 92 with a 16" barrel up to your shoulder. If you can get your hands on an M4, try it also. The conventional wisdom was always a longer barrel produced a greater site radius hence greater accuraccy. The opposite always held true for me, even as a young man.

By gum, Sixgun! You still have yours too? I was just trying my old one on the other day. Real nice fringed coat I bought around 1971, but I find it is a little snug around the waist now.Sixgun wrote:... (btw, I still have my original fringe coat from 1970 during my "hippie daze" )
Sixgun's unique loads would be certainly worth a try. He's got plenty of experience with Unique, so I wouldn't worry about it being safe, especially given the lower velocity his load gives.
One thing I especially like about the '76 is that the front sight is way out there so I can focus on it with my 57 year-old eyes nice and sharp.

Pitchy, since the eyesight is hurting, maybe you should opt for one of the repro gatling guns! That would really keep the hostiles' heads down!Pitchy wrote:I have several carbines and the rear sight is blurry on all them, hand guns are real bad.tman wrote:Pitchy, Throw a 94 with a 20" and a 92 with a 16" barrel up to your shoulder. Pitchy, I have one of the Merit shooting aids. It's a small gizmo that attaches to your shooting glasses with a tiny suction cup, and gives an adjustable aperture to look through. You turn it back and forth in size until it sharpens up your vision. They really work! When sights get blurry, you can dial it in and get both sights and your target clear when you hit the sweet spot. The handgun shooters use them.
They arent cheap, but it's money well spent.

Lookin' great. You ought to try and get in on the next great western. I actually made a coat very similar to that one out of deer hide. I ought to get the wife to take a pic some day with me wearing it so I can post it. I actually braided all the seams using the same leather instead of sewing it.

I loaded up seven rounds with 12 grains of unique using a 292 grain bullet, figure since it`s a lighter bullet than Sixguns load of 11 grains with a 400 grain bullet it should be good.
Weighed each load individually with a powder trickle.
Waiting for a buddy to show up before i fire them, more later.
