New (to me) 25-35 - *lots* of pictures added - finally shot!

Post by chadbr »

Got lucky today -- an old friend has been hanging onto some Winchesters for me. Turns out one of them is a 25-35 from 1907 that has been refinished (re-blue / wood refinish). Looks like new -- I paid him cash on the spot.

He also "loaned" me a 92 in 25-20 - I think it's from 27 -- all original.

I haven't had time to look them over in detail - I'll try to get some pictures and post them. If I wasn't so tired from work this week, I'd be a lot more excited :D

Sounds like your friend is good friend indeed to save those guns for you. I enjoy shooting the 25-20 a lot, like a high powered rim fire, pure enjoyment.

That is a nice gun despite the stock damage around the tang. Thanks for the pics!

It is a nice looking gun, but someone overpolished it enough to thin the serial number stamping. The receiver may be from 1907, but the barrel is a post WWII replacement, as it the wood. Regardless, if the price was right you got yourself a nice shooter and hunter '94. :)

Nice carbine, but the upper tang has been broken off and rewelded. The screw head is supposed to go in from the top and thread into the bottom tang.

Interesting fix.

BUT ....... the important thing is: How do it shoot?

Thanks for the feedback everyone --

I'll have to order ammo, brass, and bullets.

It will probably be a little while before I can get it in action. I'll post a range report when I get it going.

Reviving a "thread from the dead" (~4 years later!)

Well, I finally got around to making rounds for this 25-35 (if you recall my other thread on crushed necks...)

And finally got around to shooting 2 weekends ago -- shoots like a champ!

23.5 grns. of 3031 w/ Hornaday 117 grn bullets.

Whoever did the rework did a great job... slick and accurate. I will enjoy this rifle for sure.

I (and some good friends) used it to take several ground squirrels, a few cotton tails, and a big jack!

Here's my "big time game hunter" pic -- took her at ~40 yards:
WP_000082.jpg
Another shot to show the size of the jack - big girl!
WP_000085.jpg
I also had the privilege to shoot the 25-20 pretty extensively -- I'll post another thread with pictures this weekend.

Nice guns! I have a question about the Jack rabbits are they worth eating? Are they good to eat?

I forgot to mention she ran a good 50 yards after she was hit!

You can see the entry wound ... The exit was 'a big hole'.

I thought I missed the 1st shot because she took off like a bolt of lightening... I took a follow up shot while she was on the run ... At which point she rolled up.

I immediately started to bragging and my buddy says 'YOU MISSED IT BY A MILE!!!'

Well, I can't complain about the 1st shot... :)

Wow !, You don't mess around getting those range reports in, 4 years aint bad, as if I have room to talk. My range reports are usually "I hit the barrel at 20 paces" Seriously though, I have a 25-35 I need to shoot and I have only had it 2 years. As a matter of I am going up to My property today to do some work, think I'll take it along and see if any barrels need shot.
Those Jacks look awful fat and super skinny legs. Ours get big but not Fat.

To be honest I don't know for sure... But everyone tells me they do not taste good.

Oh, I love cottontail rabbit here in NY. I was curious about those big Jack rabbits, they look sort of like the big Snowshoe hares around here that are good to eat, but not many around.

Thanks

I like the 75gr. speer for blazing away at things, that jack would
have came apart with that bullet.

Thanks -- it is fun for sure.

What load do you use for the 75 gr bullet?

i use a max load (34gr.) of LVR in the carbine & 32.5 in the rifle,it
runs them around 2900 fps, I wish Hodgon had loads listed with LVR
for the 117gr bullet

No way to make them taste good? I was thinking they may be like venison, very lean and not much fat, so you would have to cook them with that in mind.

Is it they taste really bad? I have had venison that was awful, had to pretend to eat it. But when I process a deer, I cut it up and freeze the same day as I kill it. I don't like to "age" venison.

I tried a jackrabbit as a kid in Arizona and remember it as "bad" -- as in make your eyes water to cook it. But that one had probably been eating filaree, which can really give a taint to meat (or milk if the milk cow gets into it!). Ate one here in Oregon a few years ago and it was edible but a long way from delicious. If you are expecting "rabbit" you are going to be disappointed: more of a dark, tough meat than a white, tender meat. Like a lot of things, if you are really hungry they taste just fine but if you're just eating 'cause it is dinner time you are not going back for seconds.
ollogger wrote:I wish Hodgon had loads listed with LVR for the 117gr bullet
I'm calculating that LVR is a little fast to be one the best powders with the 117gr. bullet ollogger, and that's why Hodgdon doesn't show a load for it. If you are after velocity with that one you're probably going to be looking more at the 4831 burning level. However, I'll bet the 90 grain Sierra hollowpoint would do well with the LVR. I'm going to have to work with that one some time...

I've had jackrabbit that was crockpotted until the meat shredded easily and then added to taco fillings. It was good; but there are always some folks who don't like certain foods.

I'd suggest you try it and find out for yourself. Always can spice things up with some salsa too !
