Re-chamber to .30-30AI. I think it'll be the only way to get close without excessive pressure most such chambered guns can withstand.

I take that back. You might try Reloader 15. Check it out at Alliant's website: 150gr and 170gr.

Skip the 30-30 and buy a Marlin 336XLR in 308 Marlin Express. That way you don't push the 30-30 beyond it's design limits.

I shoot Cowboy Silhouette with a 26" 94 Win. I am using R-15 with my 170's at the rams. I am getting 2345 fps, but remember that's with a 26" barrel. I also have a 24" 336 and the same load clocks 2245 whith that.

How thick of a recoil pad are you using? That kicks pretty hard, don't it?

I've been working up loads for my 336 for a few years now. I've measured 2413 fps average over 5 shots from 35.5 grains of a local powder (Somchem S341) which is roughly approximately maybe BL-C(2) behind the Sierra #2000 150 grainer.

Even though I saw no signs of flattened primers, people 10 benches down came to ask me what I was shooting that made that noise.

BTW it gave me a 2.5" 100m 5 shot group (scope, off bench).

I'm also getting 2300fps from 32.5 grains of Somchem S335 (close to H335 they tell me) behind the Sierra #2010 170 grainer. No signs of pressure, and no funny noises :-) I've had it higher, but this load gives the best group (just over 2" 5 shots at 100m)

These loads were worked up by me in my rifle and if you try them and things don't work out, you get to keep the pieces you can find, OK?

I use 30 gr. IMR 3031 with the 170 gr. bullets and get 2100 fps from all three of my .30-30s having barrels from 18½ to 21 inches. HOWEVER, when I use the old Sierra .307" bullets (no longer made in that diameter), I get an honest 2200 fps. I've used both loads on game and I just can't tell the difference either in trajectory or in terminal effect.

I should note that 29 gr. is generally the recommended maximum with newer lots of IMR 3031.

If you need more gun, get more gun.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Wondering why you need so much velocity with a .30-30. You can kill an Elk with ease (one shot maybe two) with 30gr IMR-3031 driving a 170gr bullet at 2100 fps (been there done that). Although not ideal, that round will also kill a brown or grizzly bear and black bears too.

Like some guys have said, "If you need more than that go with more gun".

Travis, I don't really mind shooting these loads; and my gun has a crescent metal but plate. The weight of the 26" octagon barrel will compensate for the added recoil. I wouldn't use this load, but for increasing my percentages of knockdowns on steel rams that weigh 56 pounds. Al Foust

I already have harder hitters
  • ruger m77 300 mag
browning a-bolt 270
  • 2 marlin 30-30s. I just want to leave the others home. LOVE LEVER GUNS!!!!!!!!!! 308 me is nice but the 30-30 has been around forever. Paco has got speed out of the 30-30, just wanted tosee if others has.

bsp915,

I just loaded up a bunch of 130 gr. yesterday to try out. I am trying to match Paco's loads as well. I know ya don't need the velocity like has already been said, but if you can get it and still get the accuracy - why not?

Hobie,

What was the load with the Sierrra .307's? I happen to have a box and a half of them.

I also wondered about WHY they were .307, but listed for .30-30.

They were made that way for the .30-30 for a reason. The load, the same 30 gr. IMR 3031. I'm a simple guy, if it works I don't fix it.

Travis, you may only get that answer from Sierra themselves. It's worth a try.........they must have an 800 number. Just my 2 cents, jd45
