Why would you kill it just to kill it? Rabbits make fine eating.

Nice shot with the arrow too. What range and what poundage on the bow?

My dad was very adamant that you cant eat rabbit before the first frost, because of parasites. Distance of 15 yds, bow of 60lbs, used field points. Will use broadheads next time, fieldpoints are slow killers, even on small game.

Given the "444" in your forum name, I assume the alternative means of death could have been more messy.

I heard the same about rabbits in Florida. Great shot though! 8)

For the first few years, my garden grew more protein than veggies. I fenced it in and now the bunnies don't get in. They are mighty fine eating

l'll have to see if I can snap a picture. . .

The tree rats are in high gear, stealing the pears off of my tree. I've been year 17 years and never had one ripen on the tree, due to the deer, squirrels, and crows. It's funny to see a little cat squirrel high tailing it across the yard with a pear that has to weigh twice as much as he does.

Welcome 444tsgt. Just screw a flat faucet washer behind that field point and it will hit like a hammer! Hoppers and tree rats cannot survive that.

Forgot to mention, the flat washer also helps to keep from losing the arrow from sliding under the grass. Just in case you should ever miss! :o :D

Grandpa would look at the liver. If it was all healthy looking, it's food. Bloches and spots made it buzzard bait.

That washer is a super idea, Sir.....

Cats can be broken down into roughly two groups. Big cats are things like lions, tigers, jaguars and leopards. Small cats are things like domestic cats, bob cats, lynx and mountain lions. So that mountain lion is more closely to you little fluffy than you think.

As to what you domestic (are they really domesticated?), just about all will hunt given the chance. Some are "sport hunter" (they play with it until it either gets away or dies), and others are "meat hunters" (they eat what they kill). Most of mine have been sport hunters, however my current male will eat anything that crawls, slithers, walks or flys, living or not at the time.

Thanx BlaineG. The washers have worked great for me. I too was always told to check the liver. If not perfect, pitch it! And I have seen a few with spots and discoloration.

My Mom's family was from Cambridge, Ohio.....I'm an old buckeye, but not for over 40 years....Lot's of rabbits and squill down there. Good fishing, too. Is fishing in Ohio still all year, no size, or number limits?

I put a fence around my tomato plants because my neighbors chickens like taking a few bites from every tomato showing any red..Now they're scratching all the mulch away from my pumpkins and squash. If they were wabbits I'd blast'em.

Around the Mid-South the farmers use so much pesticide (I know they have to, or we will starve) and cleared out all the fence rows so there is loss of habitat, so if we see a rabbit we just stand and look with our mouths open.

Lots of tree rats still around though!

BlaineG, the fishing isn't too bad around here, but there are size and amount limits on most species. There are also limits on when you can catch some species. Do not have the regs handy. There seems to be a lot of rabbits and tree rats this year too.
I always heard that rabbits have a 7 year cycle of ups and downs, and this year they seem to be up.

Pitchy, I wish that washer was my idea, but I snitched it from someone else about 40 years ago. Still works fine today. I seldom shoot my bow anymore. When I look at the prices for arrows and broadheads it isn't a problem to be lobbing $20-$30 a shot into the woods. That is crazy! What happened to the old cedar arrows and 2 blade Fred Bear Razorheads? Guess they bounce off game like the .30-30s do now.

444tsgt, my apologies for hi-jacking your thread.

Ah...back in the day......Here in Wasington State, the regs are so messed up, and change daily (check the web site before going out) that you need a dang lawyer to fish anyplace...

"My dad was very adamant that you cant eat rabbit before the first frost,"

Lot of folks didn't understand much about tularemia in the 20 & 30s. Probably was good advice then.

Only 150-300 case of rabbit fever every year in USA. Most of them from handling lab animal cages.

It was almost totally replaced with disco fever in the Seventies, but lot's of youngsters tried using the rhythm system, and gave birth to the blues...
