Bayonets on Levers?

Post by mikld »

For the lever guns historians; After seeing the pic of the "tacti-cool" Mossberg lever rifle a question came up. Has the U.S. militarty ever put bayonets on their lever action rifles? I've seen pics of bayonets on muzzle loaders, breech loaders, bolt actions, shotguns, and semi & full auto weapons, but can't recall any pics or info on bayonets on lever actions.

I think there may be more of a question whether the US military ever issued leverguns.

Levergun muskets complete with bayonets were made (in addition to the Russian contract 1895s) but not, to my knowledge, issued by the US government.

I guess I need to read more, sorry. I thought the '95 Winchester was an issue weapon for a short time...

Later...
I should have just read more. The '95 winchester was used some in the Phillipines, cal. 30-40, but Army didn't care for the lever when shooting prone. Then Army went to the Springfield 30-03. Texas Rangers also used it. http://www.leverguns.com/articles/model_1895.htm

Aside from "Homeland Defense" typ uses, dont think the USG ever used a levergun as a "Battle Rifle"

With that said, I've owned a 73 carbine, 76 rifle and 86 carbine with provisions for a bayonet.

I remember when our shooting range was basically a muck-pit, and you dare not set anything down in the mud; we'd take a scrap of plywood to set guns on.

THEN I got an SKS with the spike-bayonet, and when I needed to put the gun down, I just unfolded the bayonet and stuck it in the ground, mud or not. Kind of cool.

I keep trying to talk my son into putting a bayonet on the front stabilizer of his 3-D shooting bow, since they always have to set them down so often.

There were a handfull of 95 muskets issued to the US Army for testing in the field. I believe most were sent to the Philippiens where
they were disliked by the troops and returned to the states. They were later sold off as surplus. I've seen two or three but not in some time.

I keep forgetting to get a photo of my Russian '95.
