Re: Winchester 88 Now Scoped And Ready To Go
Kind of reminds me of mine. I put a leopold on it since.
Re: Winchester 88 Now Scoped And Ready To Go
Good looker there too. And yes, I gave serious consideration to a Leupold too but back in '59, Redfields were made here in Denver so I gave it the nod for hometown's sake.

I LIKE IT!!! I want a lever action .308; I was thinking more a BLR, or a 99 but if I found a rifle like that one, I don't think that I could pass it up.COSteve wrote: What do you think of it set up like this?
I am anxious to hear how the new Redfield works for you. I have two older Redfields (3-9x, 4x) that are nice scopes, I need to try one of the new ones.
Really nice!

Very nice!!! A modern levergun with a scope is awesome. And you've got a classic one too.

Interesting how many times companies these days come up with essentially that same reticle, and tout it as 'new' and 'exclusive'. . .

That rifle looks great and it seems to be a fine setup with the optics.
How does it shoot?

Re: Winchester 88 Now Scoped And Ready To Go
I always liked the look of an 88. I just wish it was a "comfortable" gun for me to swing. Last one I looked at buying just felt like a log in my hands. Too bad really, since I really liked it otherwise.
But, not long later I found my 99C, so all is good.

I have 2 Winchester 88s in 308. One has a Weaver K3 and the other is set up with Lyman 56 receiver sight.
Re: Winchester 88 Now Scoped And Ready To Go
Steve that looks great , can't wait to hear how it shoots . And I missed the caliber . Have a '56 in 308 here with a Lyman scope.

Re: Winchester 88 Now Scoped And Ready To Go
Thanks guys. I finally made it out to the range yesterday afternoon. After some barrel break-in/rough sight-in with some WWB FMJ (shoot a couple, clean the barrel, shoot a couple, clean the barrel, etc.) I got down to some serious sight-in using the 308 Winchester 150grn shown in the photo. Handloads.com says that for a 200 yd zero with that ammo, I should be .75" high at 50 yds and 1.8" high at 100 yds with the scope 1.5" above bore axis so that is what I set it up for.
It was hot, with the temps reading 94 so I'll have to recheck this winter to see if there were any changes. Anyway, I was able to do honest 2.5" - 2.75" groups at 100 yds with it using a front support. In truth, I think the rifle could do better but I'm not sure I can. When I moved to the 200 yd targets I guess I bared down a bit more as I was able to do a 4.5" - 4.9" group. Nothing spectacular but actually better than I expected from it with my level of proficiency.
To me, it balances well and raises to the shoulder ready to go with the scope in perfect position. The Redfield scope is crystal clear and bright and the reticle is really nice. It zooms with ease and the mount/rings are solid. The action is easy to cycle from the shoulder and the brass doesn't fly into the next county. The trigger is about as good as I could have hoped for, heavy but not a lot of creep or mushy. Just a solid trigger like they use to make. If it were lighter, I'd call it a good trigger but I'm not sure one can lighten it.
All in all I'm really pleased with the 'look' of the setup, very 1959ish just like I wanted. I love the rifle's excellent condition and the great wood; all while being 53 years old! Its better than I hoped for while searching all these years for one. This and it produces a decent set of groups at least out to 200 yds (so far). Its definitely a keeper for me and my son is starting to warm up to the look too. Looks like it will be in the family to see it's 100th birthday.

That's good enough for deer hunting.COSteve wrote:--- Anyway, I was able to do honest 2.5" - 2.75" groups at 100 yds with it using a front support. But perhaps a heavier bullet would be the ticket to tighter groups. My M88 shoots very well with Sierra 180 grs RN - the very best groups have been close to 1".

That's good to know. I'm still getting to know this one and maybe the heavier bullet will get me better results.Old Shatterhand wrote:That's good enough for deer hunting.COSteve wrote:--- Anyway, I was able to do honest 2.5" - 2.75" groups at 100 yds with it using a front support. Re: Winchester 88 Now Scoped And Ready To Go
The new Redfields are, of course, made in the Leupold plant by the Leupold people. Leupold bought only the Redfield name so as to have an entry at a lower price point without damaging the Leupold brand's price position. Carry the exact same outstanding guarantee and product support as a Leupold. I have a 3x-9x, I couldn't be happier with it.
