Range Report…

Post by cshold »

Back in the spring I set up my old H&R Topper for my daughter-in-law.
She wants to give deer hunting a try this year. 8)
I finally had some time to slip out to the range a few weeks ago to get
that little 2.5 power Bushnell dialed in.
I think we have a good start.
Now it’s her turn in a couple weeks to show me how it’s really done.

With accuracy like that who needs a repeater? Good job on the rifle. I'll bet your DIL gets her deer with ease.

That is excellent performance!

I got that little H&R 20 gauge when I was 11 years old for Christmas.
My very first shotgun. I only used it for a couple of hunting seasons
until I moved up to a Winchester model 1200 12 ga.
My Dad installed the recoil pad and purchased the 30-30 barrel a
few years after I was done with it for my younger brother to use.
After all these years this was the first time I ever shot it with the
30-30 barrel. I do remember Dad saying it was a real shooter
with that barrel. 8)

Very nice.

The H&R's will surprise a guy. I had a 223 that we re-chambered to the 225 Winchester that will shoot inside 3/4". My 45-70's first three shots (once I got her on paper) was a inch and and eigth group. Both of these are at 100 yards and of course I have to do my part. Nice rifles.

WELL IT IS A NICE GROUP BUT... we all know a Pennsylvania whitetail will laugh off the 30-30 and grab the gun and beat you with it. No really I heard this at the gunshop just the other day, and you know they can't say stuff at a gunshop that ain't true! I hope she enjoys it as much as I bet you did shooting it.

P.S. I believe the stuff about the 30-30 so I am taking a real powerhouse this year.....32 special
a Pennsylvanian who has been accused of clinging to my religion and my guns......Good assessment skills.

You know, they got those old Maynard single shot target rifles to shoot very well back in the 1870's, 80's, using tall, vernier tang sights and a long heavy octagon barrel. The action of that rifle was no better than the H&R Topper. Usually there was a target type buttstock added to complete the package. Perhaps adding a different buttstock, a 30" octagon barrel, and appropriate sights might just turn that 'ol H&R into a reasonable single shot target rifle for longer ranges! It sure is shooting that way now with nothing fancy added! I wonder if anyone has ever done that? Something to ponder, anyway.

That is great! I like those older H&Rs. I can't read the label, are they 150 or 170gr?
