Found a few saw logs while cutting firewood so fired up the mill.
These are a little more managable so it went easy.

Scientific measuring system there Pitchy. Gosh... need ear protection just to watch the video... you must have some humongous ear muffs for actually being there!

Nice video Pitchy! What make and vintage is your mill. I have a Reeves No.1 made sometime between 1906 and 1912. Itls a right hand mill and we cut with a 56" insert tooth blade. We saw mostly Cedar, Red Oak, White Oak, Ash, Walnut and whatever else gets dropped off. We run it with various steam traction engines, but usually my 1914 20 h.p. Keck-Gonnerman. We will be firing up at the end of October (hope the heat here in Oklahoma breaks by then).

Too bad we weren't closer, I have some really nice red pine I would love to cut down and mill. I need to talk with the guy down the road from me who has a mill, some of the trees are getting to close and need some cut to open it up some and let them grow.

Great stuff Pitchy!

I love watching a mill work. We try to get to Pawnee OK the first full week-end in May for their steam tractor show. Lots of hit and miss engines and gas tractors too.
Some friends have their mill set up permanently there and one of the tractor boys will set his tractor and throw a belt on the mill and you can hear a steam engine with a load on it. They usually saw for 3 or 4 days so the people get a real treat.

Griff, no inspectors round here but should wear some i recon.

Cimarron, it`s a number 2 Howel left hand Mill, i run a tire on the arbor and against the pulley on the power unit.
It works pretty good and gives ya some slippage in a pinch, then she squeels like a stuck hog.

Not sure what year it is, bought it dern near 30 years ago as a pile of steel and re-wooded it.
It`s nothin fancy but has made alot of lumber for our own use.
I bet your mill really saws nice and would love to see it in action.

Borregos, wife used to put some in the horse stalls but most just sits there and rots away, the deer love to play in it alot.

Used to have a old cast iron big planer and a shingle mill set up but sold them.

Great post Pitchy, Love seeing the old mills still in action. My family (father's side) is from that background and about any chance we get we check out old mills and take a crack at em. Keep it alive.

My neighbor had a mill somewhat like that which he ran off a big diesel engine. Boy, could he cut some nice 1" X 12" pine from trees he salvaged from the surrounding forest. I used some of it to board & batten on my bunkhouse and some to make some real nice kitchen cupboards--the latter had "blue stain" pine. We don't get very much hardwood suitable for milling in Az.

I was tempted to buy his outfit when he moved, but at my age and with my travel schedule it would have just sat idle.

I haven`t run the carage off the end of the track yet but came close once

Biggest danger in a mill is something grabbing the saw blade from the off bearer end and throwing it at ya like an arrow.
Or getting caught up on the carage somehow and get sawed in half, it happens.

Ive been runnin this mill for 25 years or so and it ain`t killed me yet.
Had that plane for a month and dern near did me in

Still have the flying bug though.

Word! You could do this no sweat. The top rotor is powerless, and free spinning for lift...speed is from the back one. No complicated gears or anything

New a guy that had one , he went to land it one day and a cross wind tipped it and the rotor hit the ground.
