Rare photo of Texas Ranger!
You don't see this one too often. Colt SAA, scout belt and holster, bottle opener Victoria spurs, and Lever action with peep sight in Scabbard. Can anyone tell what kind of lever it is? The photo was probably taken in the 1920s. RR7

rangerider - Pretty cool. You've got better eyes than a lot of us. I can see spurs, but that's all. How do you know what kind you're looking at ? Also, any information on who the Ranger is ? Nice photograph, and I bet more than just me wonder how you spot these details. - DixieBoy

Re: Rare photo of Texas Ranger!
Only Victoria, Texas bottle opener spurs were made in that style. I have been collecting spurs for 45 years and I just can pick them out. When you get my age you also use a magnifying glass pretty often. RR7

Get out the magnifier again. I'm thinkin' 1895 in .30-06. Them bullets look a tad "pointy" for a tube magazine!

Griff you have a "point" there, the Texas rangers were issued "95s" in 30-40 Krag around that time. Pitchy this photo was taken around Brownsville, Texas. There is lots of mesquite and cactus, which you can see next to him in the photo, were they were patrolling for smugglers. The tapaderos were useful for some but not all the Rangers.

Re: Rare photo of Texas Ranger!
I'm 100% on the .30-06, could as easily be .30-40; that's why the "magnifier" comment, enlarged digitally, you can't see just how pointy it is. Most period .30-40s I recall seem to have flatter noses than .30-06. But if those're .45Colt in the upper part of the belt, the rifle ammo below seems a bit fat for .30WCF, my 3rd choice.rangerider7 wrote:Griff you have a "point" there, the Texas rangers were issued "95s" in 30-40 Krag around that time. Re: Rare photo of Texas Ranger!
The stock has a definite fluted comb and the crescent butt is not enough for a rifle, it could be a carbine. The first rifle that Winchester introduced with a fluted comb was the Model 55 lever gun, which first came out in 1924. However, that is not a Model 55 buttstock, so I'm stymied. I'm less familiar with Marlins. Maybe it is a Marlin.
The fluted comb really narrows it down, and would eliminate the '95 carbine, but I don't know what it is.

Re: Rare photo of Texas Ranger!
The shape of the butt stock and the location and shortness of the tang peep look like Remington Model 8 to me. Not positive on the shpae of the comb fluting, but the butt plate and sight look right. I did a google image search on remington model 8 to confirm my first though, and I'm more certain now after looking at pics. Look at the ones with tang sights in particular. The location and size are give aways.
For your quick tutorial on increasing the image size on the page (actually the whole page), hold the control key down while scrolling your mouse wheel. You can increase the magnification beyond what the little percentage sign in the lower right corner will do. It can be set back to normal by clicking the last buttom mentioned, or rolling the wheel back. I heard about that after I'd saved and blown up pics to see details. This is much simpler and quicker than saving and blowing up.

Re: Rare photo of Texas Ranger!
Remington Model 8 was also popular with the Rangers during this period. Frank Hamer insisted his men get one so they could unload on the smugglers. There is no telling how many Mexican smugglers Capt. Hamer's company killed during this time because he didn't count them. RR7

Those sure look long enough to be 30-06 shells on his ammo belt.rangerider7 wrote:You don't see this one too often. Look at these 1895's. The top gun, 3rd and bottom one have similar butt stocks. One even has a folding tang sight, like the Ranger's rifle.
Unfortunately the web site I found this on is in French.

Re: Rare photo of Texas Ranger!
Great pic RR7! I'm thinkin' I agree with Malamute. That little short tang sight and it's mounted way forward. Don't think it would clear a bolt coming back over it.
Agree with you about the taps. Used to work cattle up around San Saba and Richland Springs. You needed the taps and pliers for your horse.

Malamute, thanks for the magnification tip.
I took my Rem 81 out and it has that flute in the stock but the wrist is a lot shorter.
But after looking at the model 8 i think you may be right on, here`s a picture of one with a peep sight, looks the same.
Also check this site.

Re: Rare photo of Texas Ranger!
My money would be on Malamute's Remington 8 suggestion. Hobie has a photo of on here http://shootingwithhobie.blogspot.ca/20 ... ngton.html that shows the fluted comb, and the crescent butt.

Re: Rare photo of Texas Ranger!
I grew up in Brownsville, and am still here to this day. Tapaderos are common for brush country riders to this day. Those on this old boys saddle look new and have a Mexican flair to them, although the saddle is not Mexican. He may have bought the "taps" accross the river.
I find the cut on his jacket interesting. high on the back with long drooping pockets in the front, which look to be well filled. I don't recall seeing another like it.
Brownsville has always been an unswept corner of the border with lots of violence. That still persists today with the drug cartels. Still wild and wooly and full of fleas!

Re: Rare photo of Texas Ranger!
IM thinking the M 8 Remington also . MOST of the WIn 95s had the LYman Side mount PEEP, if they had a peep . NOT THE TANG SIght . The stock configuration is NOT WIN from all the ones I have seen . SPURS ? I don't have a clue LOL

Yep, I'm changing my vote to the mdl 8 also. If you look VERY closely, you can see what appears to be the round part of the action just forward of what we're taking for a tang sight (relative to the muzzle, or behind relative to the horse's direction)... That went unnoticed before.

OK, let's assume it's a model 8.
What cartridge is it chambered for? .30 Rem? 35?
How wide is his belt?
