Hanging a gun on the wall (pics added)

Post by RustyJr »

I have a 36 caliber muzzle loader that I am interested in hanging in my room. I have drilled out a 7/8" dowel to use as a peg to hang it on. The only thing I can't figure is how to mount the peg to the wall. I thought about putting a screw in the wall and then slipping the peg along with a little glue over it. Is there a better method that I could use? thought about using a board and mounting the peg to that but would prefer to have just the peg to hang it on. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sheetrock walls? Find studs and drill the correct size holes into the studs.

If you don't want to try centering a 7/8" hole in a 1-1/2" wall stud and/or risking weakening it, just do same with a 3/8" metal dowel rod, and slip something decorative over the exposed part, or drill a 3/8" hole in a section of hardwood dowel to slip over the metal.

How bout this? Cut the 7/8" peg to the length you want exposed. Drill into one end and epoxy a 2 or 3" drywall screw with the head cut off into that hole. Once it cures screw it in to the wall. If this is a drywall over studs wall you will need to find a stud.

On a somewhat humorous side note, I once read (Internet I think) where an LEO was in the change room at the PD and made the mistake of hanging his duty Glock on a peg like that. Needless to say the gun bump fired like a pin wheel !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o

Nate, the idea with the drywall screw might be what I do. Something along those those is what I was thinking just wanted to make sure I was on the right track. I understand the peg in the stud idea but the lady of the house would not take too kindly to me putting that large of a hole in the wall.

For a quick wall hanger, go set your gun up on the wall where you want it and locate the nearest stud and move the trigger to that spot and mark it.. Now locate the next stud that will be the support for the barrel and level your gun to the desired position and mark that spot.
Now go get a couple screws that are 2 1/2 inches or 3 (preferably torx head but phillips will do too) and slip some plastic hose cut at 1 1/4" over the screw. Go to your marks and screw the screws in at a little bit of an angle until the hose just starts slipping over the head. Now hang your gun. Not the prettiest way but sure is sufficient... works great on smooth sided guns
For pumps or bolts, set the rifles pointed right.
You might want to go longer like 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 plastic hose with longer screws.

You can buy pretty inexpensive coat/hat hooks at any hardware or home decorating store. Get some that look rustic. Some have screw holes that are partially or completely hidden, but if you pick the right ones your gun will probably cover the holes. Or if you're scared of putting holes in the wall and don't care that much about looks, 3M makes adhesive hooks that are pretty strong and remove without leaving a residue. We have a couple on the back of our closet door for robes, hats, belts, etc. I don't know how heavy your gun is, but they are pretty sturdy. Just a couple ideas.

Edit: Didn't see mod71's post. That's something like I was thinking. They make more decorative ones if that's your thing, and you can always felt line them yourself. But for 11.99 on ebay that might be something I would consider.

I use smokenrust's method. Long #8 screws and some Tygon tubing, nearly invisible and the screw holes are easy to patch if you ever decide to move it. They are little bitty holes that just a dab of DAP will fill.

I put mine high enough that the little ones can't reach and it's handy for me. We've had lots of invasions over the last year or so. Dead couples and never solved so I tend to keep something handy, and loaded!

I'd find the two studs; prepare a nice looking piece of wood (e.g. 1x4) for the span of the studs, e.g. have it coved or bevelled (don't know proper woodworking term) around the edges; insert wooden pegs on it where appropriate to hang the firearm; then stain and lacquer or varathane it. Drill through the ends and insert the screws through the board at the ends into the studs.

You can get nice little hole wooden covers at craft shops or woodworking supply houses online, put pegs on the board where appropriate to make the display look clean and presentable to the better half.

Then, you can always remove the screws and putty and paint over the small holes if you want to take the display down. And you don't risk tearing up the wall material by the weight of the iron shooter.

I think we need to form a Blue Ribbon Panel to investigate this and report various methodologies to a committee who will generate pro/con statements for each position leading up to a membership voting period following road shows to present and discuss the various schemes for possible implementation.

This is a Pic of the 36 caliber muzzle loader (on bottom) as well as an old double barrel 14 gauge. The 36 caliber has a douglas barrel which my dad says is very accurate. The double barrel belonged to my great, great, great grandfather. He was a market hunter and hunted ducks on the Chesapeake bay. He used a punt gun on the ducks and then used the double barrel as his mop up gun. The double barrel was made in London but other than that and that its a 14 gauge I really don't know much else about it. It says Stilles London on it I think. The letters are partially worn off.

Holes made by drywall screws can be filled with some cheap toothpaste and a little bit of model paint and you cannot ever tell they were there.

Find a handy corner and mount the rifle by setting the heel of the butt on the floor about 4 inches equi-distant from each wall.

Carefully lean the rifle into the corner and brace the the muzzle in the wedge of that corner.

Viola! A beautifully executed and sturdy "low wall" mount.

Hope this was helpful.

Hoppe's used to market Sportsman's Pegs, which were decorative wooden spools, stained and laquered, and drilled through to fit a long, brass-plated, round-head nail.. Depending on wall construction, they could be nailed to studs, or driven directly into log or wood-paneled walls..
I have carefully hoarded about 18 of them

Unfortunately, they are no longer catalogued...

Check yard sales, or dig in the back corners of old, independent gun shops..

Good Luck !

I should ask him....we probably are. I have his tobacco box w/burning lens in my survival bag. Really nice. The hangers he makes don't fit the double barrels too well; the barrel side has to be bent flatter to make room for both barrels, but not a big deal.
