Shoulder Holster Wanted

Post by centershot »

I have a Colt New Frontier 22/22Magnum revolver with 6 1/2" barrel that I need a shoulder holster for, preferably suede-lined. I'm probably looking at a custom job but thought I'd ask here about where to get one or have one made. Anyone have any ideas?

Contact El Paso Saddelry
They have done some exceptional work in the past.
But I do not know if they are still in buisiness.

My chest is so barrel-like, and my arms so short, that shoulder holsters don't work for me; but I sort of wish they did, because I see situations where a shoulder rig would be ideal.

Many of the name custom makers do some type of shoulder rig, and probably even more of the lesser-known but still great makers. The biggest part of your challenge will be just deciding on exactly what you want. Guaranteed, someone out there can make it for you.

There are several holster makers here on the forum, they turn out some fine work.

Back in the day when I did a lot of cowboy shooting (SASS--since gave it all up when the targets were put at 10 yards) I used a Tombstone "Doc Holiday" job. I liked it so much I still use it today while hunting or just woods bumming. It kinda fits across your chest off to one side.

Plus, it looks neat. :D

I'm at work and don't have any pics but its not too hard to google.----------------------Sixgun

Yep, for hunting, I much prefer an "across-the-chest", bandillero-type holster than an armpit-type shoulder holster too.

Some can even be slid around to the rear of the shoulder to get it out of the way, when the handgun is properly held in the hunter's hand (as it should be IMHO, when actually hunting).

Simply Rugged make a "Chesty Puller" rig that
some folks love. I have a couple of their pancake
holsters, and the work man ship is very nice
indeed. Good folks to deal with.

I'm looking to get one of the Guides Choice chest rigs from Diamond D Leather for my 629. They don't list the New Frontier as an option but it may be similar to one of the SA guns they do offer sizes for. Here's a link to their site

I've tracked down all the makers suggested but they don't offer one to fit this gun. Remember, it's a 22/22 Mag, it's the size of a Ruger Single-Six w/ 6 1/2" barrel, no one seems to make a rig for the small frame guns. My aim is to carry it in the shoulder rig with the magnum cylinder loaded, not as a primary arm but as a backup to the shotgun or rifle in my hands. A 22 Mag from a handgun equals a 22 LR from the long gun and makes a handy trail companion!

I have an El Paso Saddlery Tanker holster for the same gun you have, but mine has a 7 & 1/2" barrel.

Works great.

Here is a link to the El Paso Doc Holliday rig that Sixgun had mentioned.

Not sure if it is the same one that Sixgun used or not but it looks like they will make it for whatever gun you want.

All good ideas.

But unless I'm in a Tank or other vehicle, they just don't work for me.

Have you tried a properly canted cross-draw holster? One that sits at (if you are right handed) in the anterior lower left abdominal quadrant?

I'll give Simply Rugged a try, maybe they can make me up what I'm looking for. I know it isn't much weight but I'm trying to get rid of the need to carry anything on a belt. A belt rubs on my hip bones and causes me pain if there is any weight on it at all, so, the need for a shoulder holster. The Doc Holiday rig looks interesting but I don't think it would work under my camo bibs. Thanks to all who replied!

Irelander,
Yep, Thats the one. :D I adjust it so the gun rides about where the shirt pocket is. This way if someone shoots me in the heart, the gun will be a good block for the incoming bullet, but that ain't gonna happen because I'm shootin' first. :D It holds any Colt sized single action very well and if the barrel is a 7 and 1/2 incher, the end of the barrel protrudes a bit, no big deal.-------Sixgun

Dang OI, I thought I was back in anatomy class

Seriously, I will also suggest a "tanker" style holster. I have one of the Simply Rugged "Chesty Puller" rigs and it works okay. But, I have a custom made "tanker" that is a joy to wear. The big advantage to this one is that it is made to fit me.
