I leave for Colorado a week from tonight.
In one week I am outta here. We have a buddy who has Cancer and will not be with us for many more years and he has always wanted to go elk hunting, so we are, and I am leaving in a week(did I mention that already)>. Yeah i am a little excited and wanted to share, cause everybody around here is tired of listening to me. 5 of us going ,2 trucks and everybody has at least one elk tag and most of us have elk and deer tags so should be fun. I am the only one taking a lever..it's the one i mentioned in another post but it's a 1886 that was logged into the warehouse on November 6 1902 and will be hunting November 6 2012. Ok I couldn't sleep but this post is helping so Goodnight.

Funtastic! Elk hunting with friends is always a fine and successful venture. And sometimes you bring home some meat, too.

Glad to hear you are taking a proper gun! Have a great time and don't forget to give us a full report when you return.
I hope your buddy gets his Elk too.

Have a wonderful time. My Dad and I did a hunt in 2008 near Pagosa Springs......paradise!

Good luck! An excellent choice in rifles. Please remember to take way too many pictures.

Thunder50 just stole my - thunder where you're going to be. To the Pagosa Springs comment, SW Colorado is also my favorite neck o' the universe, but all of elk country statewide is stellar territory. .
Re: I leave for Colorado a week from tonight.
Very cool. I was fortunate to able to hunt Colorado for Elk during the 2001 BP season. Haven't been able to get back but I will someday. What a beautiful state and hunting the mountains was an incredible experience. I fell in love with the place and did not want to leave. Best of luck.

PS If you haven't been, be prepared for the altitude. It will kick your butt the first few days, but once you acclimate, wow, you feel like Superman. I live at 500 ' and hunted at 9-10,000'.

Re: I leave for Colorado a week from tonight.
I will be 20+ miles north of Hayden CO. I have been very diligent in hitting the treadmill 6 nights a week, being old and fat I started at 1/2 mile now I do 3 miles a night in 45 minutes at 4.5% grade. I used to live in MT but it was a LOOONNNGGG time ago so I am planning on taking it easy the first couple days. We are staying in Fort Collins one whole day and night to get a little accustomed to the altitude and we are driving out so it will be a gradual incline. The cabin is at 9000 and then you climb the mountain to hunt. I have a bull tag, cow tag and deer tag.

If you remember Sixgun, you had a pretty good hand in getting me and this rifle up and shooting. You are on the list of people who helped get this to happen, and I thank you for your help. Tom

Your welcome Tom.. Anytime bro! Have a great time and be careful as Colorado mountain lions like to break into tents at 3 am and eat people from Pennsylvania. -----Sixgun

We are staying in a cabin with real walls and I usually sleep with a 4 inch model 29 .....a big cat might look cool next to a caribou and elk....on my WALL!

Re: I leave for Colorado a week from tonight.
I just returned late last night with a bull from north of Grand Junction. We had a fantastic time but it will take a month to heal and clean up.
Good Luck!
I should add that it snowed the afternoon I got the elk and there were fresh lion tracks on the road when we were walking back to the truck that night.

Re: I leave for Colorado a week from tonight.
I GOT LISTS AND MORE LIST! I have done a couple long distance from civilization type hunts so its not a totally new game, but we always forget something. Our motto is; have gun ,bullets, and boots, everything else is a luxury!
We have been calling each other and double checking that we have the stuff we need but we have 1800 miles of highway to remember what we forgot...we wont remember til we get there but we have 1800 miles.
