Soooo, is it you or your wife that's gonna test skate on the ice?

Which ever one of you that does it, be careful. Bumps and bruises hurt.

How bad can it get? Beats me. I can't skate, not even on roller skates. No ankle strength. I just know that as I've gotten older falls hurt more and take longer to quit hurting. Hense, my suggestion to be careful.

Pitchy, I enjoyed that video! I went to see the Icecapades several decades ago and they were alright, but your performance blew them away ...... well ..... almost! 8)

What a blast Pitchy.. its been years since I have done that...You could do some sweet circles there on that ice square! LOL With your talent you could go a long way! Thanks for sharing...... I use to bartend at a bar on a lake, lived across the other side..... winters I would ice skate to work and stop at all the ice shanty's to see what was biting.. when the guys came for lunch I could tell them what and where. Use to boat over in the summer. One summer a friend and I tubed across... after a few cocktails... glad there were was one moter boater out there.... we got the giggles so bad and ended headed for the dam... but we were rescued... thanks for the memories.. made me think of those days with cheese curds and wine and cold winter days in an ice shanty.. Thanks bud!

I think I've just seen an Olympic contender ! We're talking style !!

Like Ms Boots, your ice skating endeavors brought back some memories for me too. When we were kids living up north, my Dad used to have a ritual every winter. There were a bunch of small lakes about a mile away that we'd walk in to, no regular road to 'em. When there had been a couple of freezes, and we wanted to go play hockey, Dad would take a big rock from along the bank and try to break the ice near the shore (where it was thinnest). If he couldn't break it, us kids had the go ahead to skate.

I used to love those mornings when the ice was slick like glass and no one else had been on it yet. Still remember the sound the blades of the skates would make on that slick ice. One of my better memories from those times. Thanks for reminding me. - DixieBoy

Mescalero - Wow, that's a tough one. I can hear that sound in my memory very clearly, but to try to describe it ...

How about, first you've got your skates just sort of making a metallic sound on the ice, when you're going straight. But when you turn, or go into a harder turn, just to feel the skates bite a little bit ... the skates would make a kind of really cool "swish" sound when the edges bit in. This is a crummy description, but I swear, I can hear that sound very clearly in my memory.

Now, this is something you got me going with here. Know what ? All the years I surfed, up until not that long ago ... the sound of ice skate blades cutting into fresh ice when you turned was (to me) very close to the sound your rails ("rails" are what we call the edges on your surfboard) make when you pull off a very crisp and smooth turn on a wave. Especially when the wave has a clean glassy surface. Kind of like a "whooshing" sound. Very distinct.

So, this is what I get for not being able to sleep. I'm up at 4 in the morning describing the sound of ice skates on smooth fresh ice, and a well made surfboard with the proper rails, slicing into a nice bottom turn or - better yet - a cutback.

This might sound like silly stuff, but you know what ? Skating and playing hockey when I was a kid, and surfing until I was well past being a "kid" are still some of the best memories I have in my life. Pure, simple, uncluttered joy. - DixieBoy
