Rossi Ranch Hand

Just bought a lightly used Rossi Ranch Hand in .357. My favorite caliber is 44 Magnum, but I didn't want to endure the recoil of one of these in .44 Mag. I think the .357 will make a very nice, fun little gun. I'm considering doing the SBR paperwork on it and getting a carbine butt stock.

It has the same sights as the EMF Rossi's had, bead front and semi buckhorn rear. I was kind of hoping for patridge sights like my Rossi 92 trappers have. It is the smoothest operating stock Rossi I've ever handled, I'm planning to do an action job (Steve Young's DVD) and it may turn out slick as glass. It also has the Taurus safety lock in the hammer. My other Rossi's don't have this.

I think this would make a dandy little piece for hunting from a blind, where you could sandbag it like a Contender.

You are probably going to change them. Everyone of these Ranch Hands with those sights have been shooting high. The 44 and 45 need both a taller front and alower rear to get it to POA.

I get three or more inquires every week about this. I now have a copy and paste email draft I save and send out to direct folks to some sights that cure the problem.

Short Barreled Rifle which is a rifle with a barrel shorter than the 16" required by the Feds. Requires the same paperwork and $200 tax stamp as a full auto, suppressor or SBS (Short Barreled Shotgun [under 18" bbl])

That red-dot looks like a laser boresight for a .45/70... That ups the cool factor by quite a bit.

Still won't buy one though.

Warhawk: I had one in .44 Magnum. It was very accurate with full-power handloads and the Hornady 300-grain XTP. Do yourself a huge favor and get that sight from Steve. Makes the Ranch Hand soooo much easier to shoot well.

I was just sitting in the woods this weekend being really bored deer hunting and looking at my Rossi 92 44 MAG and thinking that I like the short 16" barrel but I cringe at firing it without hearing protection. I have often thought about getting a suppressor for it. However the added length of a suppressor would defeat the handiness of the gun. Then I remembered the Rossi Ranch Hand. That would be a sweet gun with a suppressor and a full carbine stock! So now I'm dreaming of a suppressed Rand Hand SBR. I wonder if it would be worth the cost of a stamp for the SBR? That might just be my new project gun. I'd probably go for .38/.357 Ranch Hand, AAC TiRant 9mm, carbine stock, replace large lever loop with a small loop, and get the Turnbull FastFire red dot mount and sight. That will be one expensive gun but well worth the cost in my opinion. Any know if this has been tried before?

Oh yea, heres a pic of a Ranch Hand that AAC put a suppressor on. Supposedly they were going to make it an SBR too but I haven't seen that yet.

Due to the under-barrel magazine needing modified if the barrel is made thicker, you don't see many 'leverguns' with integrally-suppressed barrels, but the Ruger 96's have been made that way. I have a 96/22 version I made up using a Thompson Machine 'Operative' for the 10/22...



...and I've seen online photos of the 96/44 one which I'd love to have...

You could surely do the same with a Savage 99 or BLR or other 'box magazine' levergun fairly easily.

If you don't mind shortening or bending the magazine of a tubular-magazine gun, it could surely be done as well with a Rossi or whatever, SBR or otherwise. 'Takedown' would be kinda cool...

I'll tell you one thing, once you have a suppressed gun or suppressor for your gun(s), if you're heading out back to plink, or investigate a bump-in-the-night, you'll think twice before taking one of your 'other' guns. It's just NICE to have a gun that won't cause hearing damage if you touch off a round without hearing protectors.
