Did an auction today , NOW WITH PICS !
There was a decent gun auction in Charlottesville today and of course we had a couple things picked out to bid on !
First one was a Remington Model 48 16 gauge with ventilated rib and a Cutts Compensator . Gun needed some work and we were able to pick it up for a fair price .
Next came a Fox Sterlingworth circa 1929 that was made in Philly . The gun is 20 gauge 28" pipes IC/M . The gun at one point was owned by actor Robert Montgomery the father of Actress Elizabeth Montgomery of "Bewitched" fame . This gun has a few cosmetic issues I think I can get straigntened out easy enough .
The third item was a circa 1953 Browning Superposed 20 gauge skeet with 26 1/2" barrels . Overall this one is in very nice condition .
We did the bid by phone thing as opposed to sitting in the auction house . Anyway the first two auctions went painlessly as they call you on the phone as the bidding is done . I was also watching on the internet while the Browning was being auctioned .And it ended about $700 below the max bid I had given . So my pop and I drove to C/ville to pick all three up . When we arrived they told me we only won the first two as no bid was made on the third in our behalf at which point I kinda gave them an idea of what I thought of their auction company . After about 20 minutes they got the guy on the phone that had won the auction online and told him they were going to reopen the auction between he and myself .He was as displeased as I was when I came in the auction house . And I ended up with the gun at $550 less then I had given as my max bid .
Sorry to say I've not taken pics yet but maybe tommorrow !
I pla on shooting all three at the Xmas get together of my little one field skeet club down close to Ashland Virginia next wednesday !

Re: Did an auction today !
Congradulations on your purchases. Glad it worked out for you.
I went to a gun auction today, also, before going to a small local gunshow afterwards.
I had 7 or 8 guns I was interested in, but every single one went for 100 to 300 higher then I could have purchased then for from almost any old gunshop.
It was an estate auction, and I don't know, but sometimes I think those things are rigged with shills in the crowd. Either that a lot of relatives were there and had sentimental attachment to the guns. I know that is the case sometimes. Or maybe it was just the fever of bidding that got to people.

The other thing to keep in mind is with Obama's reelection and the Jackass's massacre that happened Friday there may well be an even higher jump in gun and ammunition sales and attendant prices than after Obama's original election.Lastmohecken wrote:Congradulations on your purchases. The Model 48 went about $50 more then I planned to bid !Lastmohecken wrote:I had 7 or 8 guns I was interested in, but every single one went for 100 to 300 higher then I could have purchased then for from almost any old gunshop.
However we got the little Fox for about $400 less then I anticipated and got the little Browning for $550 less then I planned on going even after the snafu !
Now there was an 18% additional buyers premium

Pics of the guns we got at the auction saturday !
First the Philly Fox that belonged to Elizabeth Montgomery's father . Gun has some slight rust spots . But I've gone over it a bit and hopefully lessened it . Gun is 20 gauge 28" modified and full . The gun seriel numbers to 1929 .
The little 1953 Browning Superposed 20 gauge skeet gun . The barrels are 26 1/2" and of course it's choked skeet & skeet . Overall this gun is easily 95-97% .
Finally the old Remington 48 Sportsman 16 gauge with the vent rib and Doggy Dick I mean Cutts Compensator with a spreader choke screwed in . This one has seen some use but still seems in very good shape .

FWIW back in the 80's I was hauling groceries for a company out of Tampa and one of our customers was a store in Indian Rocks Beach, owned by Robert Montgomery's son. I'm not sure what his real name was but everyone called him Skip. And would you believe the name of the store was, Enchanted Foods.

I especially like that Fox.

That Fox would be a tad better if it were IC/M instead of M/F . But I'm gonna try it tommorrow at our little one field skeet club before we have Xmas lunch !

I really like that Browning 20ga O/U. Glad they straightened it ou for you
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres
