300 H&H MAG

Post by 6pt-sika »

I've found this one of intrest for about 25 years !

And strangely enough I've never owned one chambered for the round !

So that has me thinking a bit

American Rifleman just had a decent article by Layne Simpson on the 300 H&H MAG in a custom gun built on a Remington 700 action .

So now that has me looking thru Ken Waters "Pet Loads" for about the two millionth time

The closest I've come to buying a 300 H&H MAG was about 15 years ago a little no longer there gunshop had a very nice Pre 64 Model 70 standard grade in 300 H&H MAG that I almost bought for around $1,200 . But for some reason I thought better of it at the time .

Now I keep looking at the Ruger #1S rifles on Gunbroker chambered for the 300 H&H MAG :?

I owned a Pre '64 Model 70 in a .300 H&H for quite a few years. In its original stock, it "kicked like a mule" from too much "drop" in the stock (IMO). I had it mated to a Bell & Carlson composite stock with their wide recoil pad and it "tamed" the recoil to '06 level. I had to send it to Bell & Carlson "tech" service because of the longer action would not fit the "standard" stock they had advertised for this caliber. (They fitted it free, which was an added bonus.) The cartridge itself is very efficient compared to all the other .30 cal magnums and its long sloping design made it operate really smooth in the Model 70. Brass life was reported to be rather short by several sources, but I found by sizing on the shoulder I could get on the average about 5 loadings before discarding them utilizing full power loads. The only thing I did not like about the Winchester was the 26" barrel that made it seem like I was carrying a "cane pole" rather than a rifle (just one of my "hang ups"). I did install a barrel band sling swivel attachment which helped the "carrying" geometry, just before I traded the rifle off for another. If I were to get another .300 H&H, I'd probably purchase a Ruger No. 1 where a 26" barrel is no longer than a "bolt" gun with a 22" in most cases (just as 6pt suggests). It really is a "Super 30/06" if you need its extra range an power.

My daughter gave me a Ruger #1 in a 300 RCM - 5/8" 100 yd group with Hornady factory 180s at just under 3000 pps. I think the Ruger #1 in 300 H&H is a classic natural. Here is a picture of the rifle - even the light barrels can be quite accurate and you have a lot of barrel length for the overall length.

A rifle on that action held the 10 shot 1000 yd record for a time.

Lower rifle is a Winchester XTR in 300 H+H. small distributor run in the 80's. This ones had the scope mounted and sighted in, never been hunted.

I am keeping a 300 H&H for a friend right now. It was his dad's rifle that he built off a 1917 Enfield action. It has a Douglas barrel and a Timken trigger group. I worked up a load for it and my friend, who has limited mobility now due to a stroke, fired a 3/4" group at 150 yards using a lead sled. His dad regularly shot sub moa groups with it at 200 yards. That rifle has accounted for many deer and elk over the years.

that´s not a KAR 98 sling.

That has a metal keeper and only one "loop".

Are those "frogs" on your rifle?+

BTT:

I have a Win 70 in .375 H & H. The new Model, from the new factory, CRF, of course.

I want its brother in .300 H & H. But PLEASE lighter weight!

Now I know why I wanted a girl... My sons only take away my guns. Ive lost 2 M70's, a 9422, an A Bolt, more than a couple '94s and a 336s to them, and I still have one boy at home!

I've said it before and I'll say it again !

That ones right sporty looking and the gun ain't bad either

I am however thinking that I need to add a #1S in 300 H&H MAG as well as a #1A in either 6.5x55 or 7x57 .

Kinda strange I have #1B's in 300 WIN MAG and 300 Weatherby and I still find myslef wanting a #1S in the 300 H&H MAG .

There was a time a number of years ago I wanted one in a Pre 64 Model 70 and I never got one .Then a year or two ago I got hung up on 721's and 722's but never seemed to acquire a 721 in 300 H&H MAG . So it seems to me a #1 is the way to go . I have seen a #1B floating around for sale but it's twice the price of a NIB #1S . Seems they only made 15 or so in the #1B configuration .

Same here. A great rifle and a great round. I have always felt some nostalgia for the .300 H&H. I would love to take her to Africa. 1886.

Looks almost 'zackly like mine which was made in 1949, I believe.

The last time I shot it was in Wyoming last year and I took the head off a dandy blue grouse!

The time before that I killed a nice bull elk.

The time before that was a really big blacktail buck.

And the time before that would have been when my wifes Grandfather owned it before he died and it was bequeathed to us and he had hunted with only that rifle since he bought it in the early 50's.
