Beaters day!

Post by Nath »

Thats us, we use our dogs and beat the cover and woods to drive the pheasants over a team of guns but today was our turn!

We split into two teams to stand and beat in alternate turns.

Considering the snow and illness stopping fellers arriving just the 12 of us (split in two) did surprisingly well! 97 pheasants and 8 woodcock.
I shot normal(poor)! Around 38 1oz English 6s for 13 pheasants and 1 woodcock.

Some photo's and notice the Mr&Mrs Pitchy scarf! Very stylish I think :D

Those pheasants should be good eating. Enjoyed the report and photos. I was surprised to see snow there!

You shoot the Hens, too?

Here in Central Europe we usually shoot only the Cocks!

If a Hen falls per accident or by the dogs, no biggie, but constantly shooting Hens will decrease the population, is the opinion here.

Most years we see some Six, some worst than others and some years nothing. Thats why everything stops here, we don't gear up for it due to it not lasting long.

We do shoot hens, some shoots limit hens shot to a few per gun. Some shoots are wild birds only, the hens may as well be gold there! These birds were reared and released to the woods in summer and the same will happen next season.
With good predation controll a few hens taken should be and is fine.
I must admit to prefering a cock bird over a hen, for the reasons you express!

Mike it is a Ugartachea(I may of mis-spelt that!) ejector, nothing to fancy but hardly used and it fits.
The week before I was using my little Holloway ejector with the last of my Pyrodex loaded shells and I shot much better! I think the shells I was using yesterday are to fast or read to modern! I think I was shooting to far in front! The leading they have left behind is bad too! By the way, stubborn lead,,,boiling water

Congratulations on the great shoot Nath! I knew old timers when I was a boy who swore that black powder shot better patterns than smokeless. They horded the few black powder shells they had left and were always on the scout for more. Now I find I prefer my hand rolled (in brass cases) loads in my Baretta SXS.

We used to drive pheasants like that in the panhandle of Oklahoma. I'm sure it is still done, it's just that I'm not there to participate.

Beretta sxs are quite rare over here!

Our game bird season ends Feb1st. I have had a good one. I think I am around the 50 pheasant mark and 8 or so woodcock with just a couple of duck and 6 or 7 geese.

Taken with muzzleloader shotguns, the same but with a patched ball, air rifles, 9422, bows and of course yer surpository shotguns. No CF rifle this year.

Nath,

I'm not much of a bird hunter. Only hunted doves in Arizona a couple times. Did OK, but gave up due to the very small amount of meat on them.

Your pheasant hunt looks like a total joy. Someday I'd love to come over and join in on such a hunt. That's a dream really, unless my wife wins the Lotto.

Also in your third pic, what vehicle is the black and silver one behind you?
