quickload help please 348
I do not have quickload, but would be grateful if someone can run me some numbers please.
Its for the 348 winchester cartridge , 200 grain hornady bullets, winchester large rifle and maybe magnum rifle primers using aa2200 powder. I do not know what other info would be required.
Thanks guys.

The jug of 2200 that I have has a burn rate real close to Reloder 7. It's a fairly fast powder for a case the size of the .348. Do you have a lot of it to burn up? Or maybe find a slower powder.
We had real good luck with Reloder 22.

Re: quickload help please 348
I have had good results with 45 grains of Reloader 7 and both of Hornady's 200 grain bullets.
Re: quickload help please 348
Thats the only load i can find with reloder 7 also. Ken Waters lists a 180 with 46 grains for 2,600+ as a max. load.elmo123 wrote:I have had good results with 45 grains of Reloader 7 and both of Hornady's 200 grain bullets.

Re: quickload help please 348
I don't think 2200 is your powder. I started inputting data, I was at 80% capacity and already over pressure.
at 96.5% capacity, I was over 80,000psi.
Reloader 17, Win 760, IMR 3031 and Ramshot Big Game all can produce 2500+fps with that bullet and pressures 41-43K psi's
20" barrel.

Re: quickload help please 348
Thanks guys. 2200 is the last powder that I have that I have not tried in the 348. I have a lot of it, but I only have one use for it so far and that is for the 300grain 45-70 reminton hollow point bullets. Super accurate with full loads. It also works great in the 444 marlin with 240 grain bullets and full loads.
I want to experiment with the 348 this spring, but having trouble locating powder at the moment, who isnt? Local gun store had 1lb of IMR 4895 left for $39.00+ tax. If they value it that much, they can keep it.
Have tried win760..OK nothing special. IMR 4350...not really that good for anything, IMR 4064...fairly good , but looking for something that will shoot an 1'' at 100yds. I made up a load using W748 which looked vary promising maybe the best so far, but I cant find my data. I should maybe try 4831, rl 15, r19, 4895. I have a stack of load info here from other sources, but just need to find the magic load. This has prooved to be the toughest cartridge/caliber to sort out so far.
Thanks again guys and to marlin32 for the data.

Re: quickload help please 348
I get sub 1" groups with 53 grs of imr 4895 and 200 hdys @ 2450 fps in a 24" bbl. am working on RL15 and RL17, 4350 powder works better with the heavier weight bullets like 220-250 gr. danny
Re: quickload help please 348
I was really looking at using 4895 for the .348. AA2200 was not even being considered. Now, wanting to try it for yourself, I understand that.

Re: quickload help please 348
I will be trying IMR4895. Some have had good results with IMR4831, which in theory should proove to be good in this cartridge. These two powders are a good stretch apart on the powder charts, and sometimes I have found that some of the less mentioned or popular powders can come up trumps, but I certainly dont try anything unsafe. I have the 24'' barrel, and if I can get sub 1'' I will be happy.
Its jumping the gun a bit, but I think you may be right Danny. I am thinking a 230, 240 or maybe upto a 260 grain jacket bullet would be easier to load for if it were possible to chamber in the rifle without seating the bullet base below the cartridge neck, but this is not really possible.
Hobie, when you try out your loads, let us know what you find. I am sure you will anyway.

Re: quickload help please 348
Flatnose, I think your right about the straightwall cases that you've tried, Out of my ariska 38-55 it got the most velocity with 270 grain hornady sp bullets. Truthfully I was able to push the 270's almost as fast as the 200's and 220's with aa2200. Works well with smaller bottle neck cases like .223 also. I did get pretty fair velocity out of 30-30 too.

Re: quickload help please 348
The bullet base projecting into the powder is often detrimental to cast bullet accuracy but shouldn't bother a jacketed bullet. So feel free to try some of the heavier jacketed bullets.flatnose wrote:I am thinking a 230, 240 or maybe upto a 260 grain jacket bullet would be easier to load for if it were possible to chamber in the rifle without seating the bullet base below the cartridge neck, but this is not really possible.
And I looked at your AA2200 in QuickLoad. Assuming a COAL of 2.795", QuickLoad predicts that 46 grains would give you about 2450 fps with 39K pressure, and 49 grains would be a max load with almost 2600 fps and 46K psi. QuickLoad doesn't provide for use of different primers, and since we know primers can make a big pressure difference that alone shows you you gotta take the QuickLoad predictions with a big grain of salt. But if you are pretty comfortable with using a chronograph to check how close velocity is to projected, and with watching cases for pressure indicators, that would give you some idea for starting a load test.
I am scratching my head and wondering just what you are going to see for pressure indicators though, since the 46K max pressure spec isn't going to show case head expansion and isn't going to give any sticky extraction. If you get either of those I think you are already quite a bit past SAAMI pressure spec.
Like Marlin32 said, on paper the AA2200 doesn't look like your powder with those loads ranging from 70% full to just 80% full at max pressure. But if you try it, let us know what you find. And are you really not going to be happy with anything larger than a 1" group?

Re: quickload help please 348
arjunkie,
I agree. It is a really good powder in the straight wall cases, and also in the .223. We had a problem with cycling in the ar's though, but good accuracy. I tried it in the 30-30 with 150 grain bullets, and it did give good velocity, but groups were 2.5'' or even worse. For me, it was just seemed a waste of components.
earlmck,
Thank you for the figures. I want to run this cartridge at or near its full potential with jacket bullets, as I have a couple thousand of the hornady 200's, plus I would not want to seat a gas checked cast bullet below the case neck.
The aa2200 is a ball powder, and have found for the most part they shoot better at the higher load densities. If I max out pressure at 80% load density that does not look too favorable. Below 80% maybe better with mag primers, but I really dont like using them.
I agree with what you say about pressure signs. Thats the tough part. There is no 100% accurate method to determine the pressure without test equipment. It looks like it would be a better bet to go with the 4895 stick powder.
Group size is the challenge of the sport for me. I dont hunt. I have nothing against it, and would certainly do so if the right opportunity arose. Each time I shoot paper i always strive to better my last results. I use a lot of benchrest techniques, and have almost every rifle I own shooting an inch and most way under, bordering on what would sound like pure b.s. stories. I have a feeling the 348 may take some sorting out. Its going to be fun.

Re: quickload help please 348
Perhaps time to update data and bullet availability for the 348 Win.
.348 WCF:
Hornady has discontinued the 200 gr FP jacketed bullets, unfortunately.
(For reloading 348 cases & bullets-QuickLoad IS NOT your best source-look at Ken Waters and Handloader or other sources)
I have 4 Model 71 Winchester rifles and my best results are:
Bullets:
Hawk, Fury Bullets, Swift- Barnes (Cast bullets w/o gas checks)
As of this 8/22 post-Midway and Graf post out of stock on bullets/brass
Go to the bullet maker direct. Like Fury in MI. and Hawk in NJ. Swift is back ordered. Kodiak is OOB as is Woodleigh.
You can also POST looking for Hornady flat Pt 200 gr bullets. Some are still out there.
Brass: Starline and W_W W-W seems more available now.

Re: quickload help please 348
I wasn't sure where to post this data, on this thread or your new one on availability of 348 component availability, but since you specifically mentioned Quick Load, I put it here. It appears you are correct and judging from their website, Hornady has stopped making all bullets in .348 caliber. And Woodleigh and Alaska are both gone as far as I know as well. Here is the data with a 200 grain Hawk bullet which, if you can get a hold of them at all, might be available. Reloader 26 and 17 are the powders of choice with the 250 grain Hawk bullet. These are MAXIMUM PRESSURE LOADS and should be worked up to slowly! -Tutt
