Need to locate an odd ball metric bolt

Post by J Miller »

I'm looking for metric bolts preferably rounded top with a slot (pan head ?) in the size:
M7 x 1.25 pitch. Very odd ball. Nobody around here carries that size and I've not found it on the net either. Then again my search abilities are challenged.

Anybody know where to find such odd bolts?

Joe the speedometer retainer plate on some VW transaxel used a m7x1.25x13 phillips head screw.

We're a metric country and the only place I've ever seen an M7 bolt is on the inlet manifold of the 1220 cc four cylinder air-cooled boxer engine from a Citroen Cub.

Couldn't find replacements anywhere so tapped the head to M8 and fitted capscrews. Problem solved.

Citroen is French and Canada is metric (I think?) so www.ebay.ca? :-)

My local ACE Hardware is fabulous when it comes to fasteners. Fastenal is great, but when one of something is needed, ACE is the place!

I've been buying parts and tools from McMaster for a dozen years, but this time, they didn't have what I needed - M7.
Seems only the French have adopted M7 as a standard fastener size.
I did find it here, though, another CA supplier.

Fair prices, shipping and services, seem to be Avis to McMaster's Hertz. They try plenty hard.
Good luck.

oops, this may not be the place - they only have 1.0mm pitch.
in fact, google didn't show a supplier for anything but the taps.
You may have to get a friend in the UK to find it...

I will check out the links you have given me.

There is about 80 gazillion older Singer and import sewing machines out there and most of them use at least one of these bolts. It's said to be a Singer proprietary bolt thread, but in reality it's an M7x1.25 thread. It's the motor mount bolt.

I have a number of original and import machines and some spares as examples and when you measure them, they all come out to 7mm dia with a 1.25 thread pitch.

Around here even Ace only has 1.0 thread pitch and they skip from 6 to 8 mm diameter. Lowes has M7x1.0 but not the 1.25.

www.boltdepot.com I've found a number of odd sizes in metric from them for use on firearms. They have a good website and you can find what you're looking for pretty easily.

If it is Singer's "proprietary" size, maybe they could sell them. Have you checked with J.C. Whitney? They are an automotive everything supplier and might just have some.

Here is a sewing machine parts site that does carry them. They are the Chinese stuff and I'm not sure of the quality.
{ http://www.shop.sew-classic.com/Motors- ... ts_c21.htm }

On the bottom of the page the bolt shown is what I'm looking for, or that idea anyway.

I'll have to do more looking.

jmiller,
Checked that site and they didn't have what I need.

Piller,
Singer and many other manufacturers used that bolt to mount their external motors with. When they went to the internal motors in the 60s or 70s they quit using it. Even Singer doesn't stock it any more.
My local sewing machine guy says he can't get them other than robbing them off other machines. (He needs to look harder)

bulldog,
Nice links but none of those are what I'm looking for.

Joe, I find it hard to believe Singer would be using a metric thread of that year!

Could you stick one of these in a drill chuck and round the head with a file?

Nath,

I can't swear Singer used metric, but I have original Singer bolts, Japanese machine bolts, Chinese accessory bolts and they all use the same thread.
I have a metric thread pitch gauge and I've checked them all.

I suspect that Singer used that odd thread because it's very similar to 1/4x20 but just a wee big larger. So back in the old days before metric became common it would have been considered a proprietary thread.
That is only a theory.

What is fact is that Singer has used that same thread for motor mounts from the first electric motor they offered, and that's well over a 100 years ago.

All of these auto and motorcycle type bolts are just too expensive. All I'm looking for a source of inexpensive bolts. I could just by from the site I linked to, and would if I knew the quality of their bolts.

Perhaps, it would be worthwhile to borrow a tap/die and use another size if these are proving troublesome...

No, that's not an option. None of the machines have damaged threads. So far I've been able to beg, borrow, or find motor screws. I just wanted to try and find a source of quality heat treated bolts of that size and TP.
Guess I'm stuck with the Chi-com stuff.
