Cleaning Henry .22 from muzzle

Post by sore shoulder »

I absolutely despise doing this. My 10/22 target and Ithaca/ Sears Ted Williams single shot .22 are the same way, but cleaning them from the muzzle doesn't bother me near as much as running the rod in the muzzle of the Henry. Anyone else ever bothered by this?

FWIW, it's no big deal to clean a Henry's bbl from the breech end - remove 5 screws.

The tang screw removes the buttstock, then the four receiver cover screw's removal allows the cover to be lifted off the receiver, carrying the bolt along with it.

Clean to yore hearts content.

Assemble in reverse order. ;)

I seldom clean the bore on my .22 rifles, but when I do, I simply do the same as with any of my rifles, I use a quality Dewey Mfg. Co. coated rod equipped with an appropriate brass bore guide to protect the muzzle's crown:

No worries here! :D

The bore snake works great with .22's and the OTIS flexible rod with the right sized jag (the smallest one) works good too.

I've been cleaning my .22s from the muzzle as needed for decades. From my first Savage .22 bolt to the Win 9422 I have had since 1977.
It doesn't bother me one bit even though I do clean from the breach when I can.

I do not seee sawww the cleaning rod as if I was sawing a log, I gently run the rod down and back.

Oh, and it bothers you here is a cure:
Buy a quality 17 caliber cleaning rod. Hunt up a FIRED 17 HMR case and drill a hole in the center of the head. Use that as a muzzle guard. The neck of the 17 HMR will slide right down into the .22 cal barrel perfectly.

Ok....I'm in denial...How can a soft aluminum rod damage a hard steel barrel? Especially, if you are not trying to do so?

Blaine,

Solvent and oil on the rod attract fouling. That combination acts like a lapping compound and will eventually cause wear.

Keeping the rod clean and being careful prevents that.

Also the aluminum, being soft ,will imbed with grit and that causes wear after some time.
Joe`s home made bore guide idea is the best way to go.
I go the Dewey rod and care route.

Blaine, you just made me puke a little. :( A Dewey rod is some of the best money I have ever spent. I will admit to using the last section of a cheap aluminum rod with an AR chamber brush but the other 2 sections agent in the trash years ago.

Well I use a one piece composite rod but it has a knurled aluminum threaded fitting I don't like. I'll just start using a bore snake. Thanks for all the replies gents.

I agree, Blaine. Remember, rocks, paper, scissors...!!! I've been using aluminum cleaning rods for "forever" inserted from the muzzle with no damage to the steel of my rifle barrels. Sometimes I will use a plastic straw in the muzzle, but I think it's more for the theory of it than the necessity.

...well, I clean what needs to be cleaned, however it can be cleaned. My Henry gets cleaned from the muzzle, always.

Like mentioned above, I just remove the side plate screws and stock then clean my Henry from the breach.

Well if doing a thorough cleaning of the action facilitates cleaning from the breech then I'm good with that.

If you're going to shoot leverguns, you're going to do the vast majority of your cleaning from the muzzle end. I have leverguns I've been cleaning that way for almost 50 years. If done carefully & gently, I see no need to worry at all. I've never seen the slightest "rod wear" or fall-off in accuracy.

Yep, This ^^^ Same here. Bought my first lever gun in 1970. Still have it, and shoots just as good as it did when new.
