What causes the the lever to flop down when a round is chambered in a 94 AE?

Re: 94 AE Help
The Winchester lever gun has a small safety catch pin sticking out just behind the trigger. This pin must be depressed by the lever as the shooter grips the lever and wrist area in order to unlock the trigger mechanism before firing. The lever is purposely a bit loose to keep it away from the safety catch pin. At least that's what my common sense tells me!

:A clear view of the trigger block safety plunger and catch that was simply but cleverly designed to disallow the trigger from releasing the hammer unless the lever is completely closed and the action is locked.

Re: 94 AE Help
I'm talking about 1-2 inches.
Re: 94 AE Help
There is also a detent plunger on the actions floorplate that faces back towards the trigger. If you look at Hagler's picture you can just about see it on the left side middle of the photo. If this is not engaging or is missing it will cause what you describe.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

Re: 94 AE Help
1-2 inches? Then there is a major problem with that rifle, do not use it.
There is a beveled area at the rear of the link. This beveled area snaps over the detent plunger fitted to the front edge of the lower tang.
If that doesn't or isn't fit properly it will not hold the action closed. If it drops as much as you say the action is open enough to be unlocked and is dangerous.
Also if the link is held closed by the detent plunger and the lever is hanging that far down, then there is most likely internal problems.
Yes, you can hold it closed but that isn't the way it should be.
The rifle should be examined by a competent gunsmith.

Re: 94 AE Help
The detent plunger on the floor plate was stuck from dried oil. An easy fix. The rifle had sat for over 20 years and I was too lazy to take it apart and clean it. It's a 7-30 with a 24 inch barrel and is in pristine condition other than dried oil. I know what I'm doing tonight.
Thank you very much.

Re: 94 AE Help
It may have a bent/sprung lever and unsafe like Joe said.
I would be checking it close before trying to fire it.
Can you pull the lever all the way up so the lever is parallel and in contact with the lower tang?
How far away from the tang is the lever when the breech bolt is fully locked?
