Came across a Ruger Old Army at what seemed like a very reasonable $400 and a 45 Colt cylinder for another $100. Has Pachmayr grip and the original Walnut. What say you?

Adjustable or fixed sights? Either seems good at that price... they're built like the proverbial out-house.

Good price. S/s or blue? 5 1/2 or 7 1/2? Inquiring minds want to know. Wish I had my 5 1/2 s/s adj. back.

Our dishwasher would probably hold a few dozen of those .... But I wouldn`t put one in there.

Buy them both. Thats a good price now, and they will only get more expensive over time. Plus they are really fun pistols to shoot.

Some guys do clean theirs up that way (if stainless).

I just put 60 balls & conicals through my stainless OA yesterday with 777 powder, but I'll clean her up in the sink later this morning. (The grips were removed and she was liberally sprayed with WD40* to coat it overnight, as we had company over for dinner and drinks after the shooting was over...)

* My only use for WD40 on a gun -- period!

That's exactly what I had, Fred - Jump on it, like stink on a snunk ! (especially at that price).

A close friend of mine (50 years) currenly has it with him in Florida, where I hope he's shooting the snot out of it.

I showed him how to load Gallery Loads using the .457" RB over 30gr BP in .45 Colt cases for the conversion cylinder; or 30gr of Pyro "P" in the cap cylinder under the same RB with a butterknife spread of Crisco lard in each chamber mouth to keep everything loose as a goose for an afternoon's shooting.

BTW - Since it's stainless, I DID clean it in the kitchen dishwashing machine !

I didn't just throw it in, though - I first removed the grips, then disassembled the cylinder & loading lever. (I cleaned the blued carbon steel cylinder as normally).

I put the frame, cylinder & loading lever in the top rack of the dishwasher with some detergent in the dispenser - after emptying the machine of everything else.
I removed the gun/parts from the dishwasher just after the first wash & hot rinse cycle - so the later heat/drying cycle9s) wouldn't mess with the gun.
The gun parts were so hot that they air dried in about 5mins - and were always squeaky-clean.
(I later ran the machine through a full cycle again, but empty with detergent, to ensure there was no residue left to get on household dishes, etc)

I just remembered that I have a NIB, Stainless, 7 1/2" Adj, roll marked 1776-1976, stashed away. If I were interested in selling that one I'd start at 750....

I had one NIB in '83 I kept for 1 year and traded it for a NIB Ruger 22LR MK1. never shotthe Old Army either.

I'll trade you a NEF Handi-rifle in .223 and 1000 rounds of 22LR for it.

I also knew that if you get guns hot enough they self dry.

I sold a stainless Old Army on Gunbroker a month or so ago for a customer . Gun was LNIB he told me he had fired it on two seperate occasions maybe 24-36 times each session . Anyway he did an excelent job of cleaning it as it looked unfired . I think he told me he bought it new in the early 90's and it hadn't been fired since about 1995 . Anyway I listed it on GB and it sold I think if my memory's correct for about $705 .

I had a blued one I bought new in 1978 for $125 with two cans Pyrodex P powder and two boxes speer roundballs and two tins of Remington #11 caps !

Sold it in 1987 without the extra's and a good bit worn for $250 .

Oly, them some nice looking irons. They also make a 45ACP cylinder for the BP pistols. Makes my head spin thinking about them.

Stainless 7.5" adjustable sight models have been selling for $600+ for some time... The cult gun to find is the 5.5" stainless/fixed sight. The last one I had I sold last year unfired for $1300.00...

And did you note the lack of lawyer lingo on the side of the barrel? Mine is from a "parts cleanup run" that they made a few years back after the gun was officially out of production. (They hid the lawyer lingo under the ram rod.)

Here in the UK we can only use cap and ball pistols for CAS so used Old Armys sell for the equivalent of $1000 each.
I'll not be selling mine though.
