Has the price bubble burst?
From watching the "for sale" columns on several gun forums I read, it seems to me things are starting to calm down. Particularly, things that are a bit (or a bunch) overpriced just dont move like they might have a few months ago. There are several such items on this board. On one certain board, an ammo scalper posted some vastly overpriced bulk .22 ammo and got absolutely hammered by his fellow board members about it and they were not nice about it at all. Dont think he ever sold it. What are your feelings on this, what is going on in your area?

Re: Has the price bubble burst?
Good. Richly deserved. Shopped in Cabela's a little yesterday while waitin' on Blaine; didn't look at rifle ammo, was searchin' for some more 45ACP, Remington 185 Golden Sabre was $34.99 for 25 rounds. Didn't seem to be flying off their shelves! 185 gr Federal Hydra-Shok was $27.99 for 20 rounds... that didn't seem to be moving very fast either. Since I reload with same Speer bullet Remington is using, I didn't "feel the need" to buy some of their over-priced ammo. Now, if they'd have had some reasonably priced 100 round boxes of 185 grain lead 45ACP I might have parted with some coin!Old Savage wrote:I think a some folks are going to be stuck with a lot of 22 ammo.

Re: Has the price bubble burst?
Price jacking irritates me totally, to the point where I will typically stop going to that store for anything, not just ammo. The stores with the jacked up prices in my area seem to be well stocked and the ammo isn't moving. I prefer to wait it out and keep window shopping and patronize the stores that are keeping the prices reasonable. I did find a brick of .22 LR for $21 a few weeks ago, but reloading components still seem to be pretty scarce. I haven't found pistol powder on the shelf for some time now.

Re: Has the price bubble burst?
Things have not improved a bit here in the far north of California. Retailers are not price gouging, but are charging full retail whereas before ammo could be found at less than full retail prices. Now any ammunition or reloading components other than premium-priced bullets are sold almost immediately, and the Sportsman's Warehouse has a long line of guys waiting at the door on Wednesday mornings when the shipments arrive. They limit the amount of powder, primers, and ammo each person can buy, but still sell out quickly.
I do think things may be calming down slightly though. I like to watch bullet molds on Ebay, and I see that the guys who were getting well over $100 bids for a $39 retail Lee 6-cavity mold are now getting final bids under $60. Still, Midway and other big outfits are showing "out of stock" on much of their bullet casting and reloading inventory. I am especially alarmed that large scale powder vendors like Powder Inc. are still not stocking powder. I can't help but wonder where it is all going!
As a side note, I have noticed one very good thing with this ammo shortage. At the BLM's public shooting area where everybody in this area shoots, the cans, bottles, and other junk left shot to pieces and scattered all over the place by slob shooters has ceased. They can't shoot if they can't get ammo. Most of the shooters there now are the better off folks who tend to clean up after themselves. The down-side of that is I don't find any empty brass like I used to.

Re: Has the price bubble burst?
Yes, Its on the mend. Although my well connected bud never did run out, he did get low and had to hide the majority of his ammo in the back room in order to keep mobs of non-regular customers from scarfing it all up and selling it on the internet. Then he had to enact policies, like "one case per customer" or "ammo sold only with the purchase of guns", or "range use purchases only".
There's a big difference between gouging the customers and charging full retail. My bud has been selling at full retail and why not..........................the oil companies do it, in fact, they gouge.--------------6

Re: Has the price bubble burst?
I never did see a lot of price gouging around here. The biggest problem was availability, and that still is a problem with 22 rimfire, 9mm, 223 and such.

My SWAG is that "normal" prices are going to be 30-50% higher than the Old Prices Considering that commodities/wages have not jumped, I'm appropriately hacked off

Re: Has the price bubble burst?
I haven't seen .22 ammo or any but shotgun primers on the shelf here in a while, but then I also quit looking.

The whole ammo thing because of the election has been a PITA,
having said that it has been an interesting excercise in mob mentality.
Which I believe is losing steam and playing itself out.
What blew me away was the rampant greed out there.

I've been slowly buying very reasonable amounts since BoBo got elected the first time....PPPPPPMescalero wrote:The whole ammo thing because of the election has been a PITA,

I'm not out of any supplies I need, but I don't use live fire practice as much either--right now about 10 rounds/caliber is all I bust caps on when I shoot.

Re: Has the price bubble burst?
If we held to the Austrian ('free market Capitalism') economic model prices would have risen, but quickly readjusted back towards normal as production increased (funded by the temporary price hike) to meet demand.Mescalero wrote:Not according to Kennesian? economics.
Unfortunately our socialist tendencies have caused us to favor Keynesian economics for the past several decades, which is more of a 'Crony-Capitalism' thing.

Re: Has the price bubble burst?
Won't buy at scalpers' prices. Shot the 1887 12 gauge a lot more with cheap trap ammo and hunted with $3.00 for 5 rifled slugs. Hope the horders and goughers choke on their stashes and lose their shirts.
Re: Has the price bubble burst?
380 ammo is still very hard to come by.
