Ok, read the post about things being slow on the forum, and decided to brag a little. Shot a good score with my Win 94 Legacy in .357 (my Nath gun) yesterday. A beautiful day for shooting. Load was 10 grains of 4227 and a 180 grain Mastercast soft lead bullet. Glad I went.

I hit 9 rams which is not uncommon, but after 8 years I'm still trying to get 10 rams. I have ten of all the others. This was in pistol cartridge, half size.

That is fantastic. Most folks know the pistol cal./ hunter pistol category is half the distance and the normal life size targets are half size. But, most never think about how half by half really means the targets are now one quarter the surface area or square inches of surface. Standing off hand, a 34 score is really good.

Thanks, 35 is master these days. I do have a 37 in that category, but it's been a while.

It's fair to say that as long as the proportions are the same, one category isn't harder than another. The reason I do better in that category is the gun and load, not so much the target size. HOWEVER:

there is one exception to the equal proportion setup. Chickens are half size, but ought to be set at 25 meters. However, due to splatter and jacket separation, it was decided to set them further out - 40 meters. So the chickens are smaller than they should be. They are barely larger than turkeys. Chickens aren't a "gimme" like they are on long range. This is true for smallbore as well.

I well know how difficult it is to shoot a score like that, just one point shy of Master Class, and using cast lead bullets to boot! Sounds like you have your rifle and load dialed in perfectly. Keep at it and those ten Rams will be yours soon! What other silhouette disciplines do you shoot?

I shoot all three disciplines of NRA Lever Action Rifle Silhouette each month here in Shasta County at Hat Creek Rifle & Pistol Club in Burney, California. I'm still trying for 10-in-a-row on Turkeys to complete my Grand Slams for both Pistol Cartridge and Rifle Cartridge disciplines. I completed a Slam in Lever Action Smallbore a couple years back.

I also shoot NRA Smallbore Hunting Rifle, High Power Hunting Rifle, Black Powder Cartridge Rifle, and Muzzle Loading Rifle silhouette. The Muzzle Loading discipline is not NRA sanctioned, but merely a discipline we shoot using rules established for the state matches sponsored by the California Rifle & Pistol Association.

Yep, silhouette shooting is a lot of fun, no matter what discipline it is!!

It took me 6 years to earn a Master class rating, in smallbore Cowboy class.


The best I have ever done, in Smallbore Hunter Class, is 32, but those are the tiny targets.

A 34 is very impressive, especially in the smallbore/pistol caliber discipline. Like you said, the chickens are a "gimme" in big bore but not so in the other two. The closest to "gimmes" in smallbore/pistol are the pigs, and even then I manage to miss #10 most always....I get excited after nailing 9 in a row and blow it.

I started out 8 years ago by doing OK and was in AAA right away in big bore and pistol caliber. I guess I have been "sandbagging" in AA in smallbore, but I never got too excited in that discipline. Like Shasta, I never have nailed 10 turkeys in a row in any of the 3 disciplines...did nine a few times.

One time at the Pa. Regionals in 2008 where the match director made it a 60 shot match, the 150 meter turkeys were next to impossible to see when it was my turn to shoot. The sun was directly on those white turkeys. I told my spotter "The Gunny" that I would use the rail as an aiming point and just go up from there. I missed 15 in a row and still hear about that.

In all honesty, I average 28 X 40, sometimes a 30 or a little better, and sometimes a 26 when I'm not in the mood. Unlike most guys, I use cast bullets in original pre-war (most always pre WW1) Marlins and Winchesters with standard trigger pulls (3-5 lbs.) and standard hunting tang sights with no special apertures or hoods................in other words, the way the game was intended to be when it all started...........no 10 oz trigger pulls and Redfield Olympic receiver sights that are common on the line today.-----------------6

Congratulations, your course is somewhat harder than ours. We have an informal league that only allows cast bullets so our chickens are at 25 yds, everything else is the same. I average 27-30 with my Rossi 92 and actually pretty close to that with my K-38 pistol. I am a better pistol shot than rifle shooter for some reason, don't know why. Last week shot a 31 with my K-38 and red dot sight. My personal best with the pistol is 32. Love that game!
