Winchester 1886 Makes Meat
Hi All,
I have just been up in the hills about four hours drive West of Sydney doing a little hunting.
Took my 1886 in 45-70 out for a walk and shot this feral goat.
Range was only about 50m.
Took him through the front shoulders and then the projectile went through the head of a small goat (unseen by me) standing behind this guy. Two for one I guess.
My load was 29 grains of 2207 behind a 405 grain Silver Shadow projectile.
This fellow was a bit stinky for anything but dog meat but the smaller one gave us a good goat curry the next night and
plenty of meat was left for a couple of more meals.
It sure was fun to knock something over with my 1886, but I have to say that it is pretty heavy to carry around those hills.
Pop.

Now there is a neat old rifle.
Re: Winchester 1886 Makes Meat
Yep, that's a heavy duty hammer there. Hard to argue with two-for-one kills though!
Enjoy!

Good to see a vintage Winchester '86 still working.

Re: Winchester 1886 Makes Meat
What a classy pic If it was in black and white, would still look good. Do you make anything out of the horns?
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Re: Winchester 1886 Makes Meat
Great picture! It's good to see an old Winchester that is still in service rather than being hoarded away as too valuable to shoot. I trust you will enjoy many more successful hunts with it!

Congrats Pop. Always glad to see another old Winchester shooter who loves the 86. Have a couple myself that I hunt with.

Re: Winchester 1886 Makes Meat
Yea Pops, that ole '86 does the job nicely. By looking at the barrel contour, I'd say that rifle was made between 1900 and 1908.

Guess heavy is about your definition of heavy, as an ex machine gunner....
Nice to see an old piece still out and about.
Couple months back I was zeroing my 7mm Mauser, made somewhere around 1895-1930 at the latest, South American military piece sporterized long ago, and two kids doing the same with their (far newer pieces) were admiring it. I handed it over and the 8 and 10 year old were blown away that a rifle made when their grandparents weren't born yet 1. looked that good and 2. was still in use regularly (it got a coyote not long after).

Nice shooting,
I wonder how many other critters that gun has accounted for in it's lifetime

Great shooting! That 1886 sounds like perfect medicine for your wild water buffaloes up north.
My goat gun weighs 3 pounds (Rossi R357S in 357 magnum) but your goat gun is 100 times cooler.

Hi Griff,
Here is a pic of the projectile and loaded rounds.
Pretty standard stuff.
