The book was nearly complete at the time of his death, and his co-author was able to complete the final edits. I am extremely glad the book was completed and released, as it is a very enjoyable read that I think most gun owners will truly enjoy.
American Gun is more a history book than it is a typical gun text. Firearms play an important role, but they are merely the common thread throughout the book tying together many parts of United States history...
is a good lead in for the book. If you haven't read it, you should be!
Two leverguns figure prominently in his story, the Spencer and the 1873 Winchester. Worth the cost of the book, for their stories alone. But, I think, anyone on this and many other gun forums will find several of his other choices equally well entertaining and spot one. I might not have chosen the Spencer, but after reading his story of it, I can fully understand why he included it and not the Volcanic or Henry.

When I went to the range Saturday, the range owner and my gun dealer, said he had a present for me. He gave me a copy of the aforementioned book by Chris Kyle. He had read it, and passed it on to my. It is a very good read and a great book for any student of American history and firearms. I highly recommend this book.
I'm with Charles on this one. It is a very good read and is written just like he was sitting across the table talking to you about the guns and the bits of history that go with them. I've recommended it to all my friends, and the money for the book is going to his widow (who spoke at the NRA convention this year).

Until then, the reader's digest version... what are the 10 gun, por favor ?
Well Rusty, we know one is the Spencer and one is the '73 Winchester.
Guess we'll just have to buy the book to learn the other ocho.
..
Well, if you insist...
The American Long Rifle (aka: Kentucky Rifle)
Spencer
Colt SAA
Winch. '73
1903 Springfield
M1911
Thompson
M1 Garand
.38 Special Police Revolver (not really specified, but the S&W & Colt are both named), more of a cartridge thing that the specific revolver
and lastly, the M16.
As I said, a couple of his choices wouldn't be mine, but... my list wouldn't vary by much! There are historical points to each of his choices that well justify his choices. And, snipits(sp?) of info on several that I didn't know.
