Winchester Model 94 parts help
I'm in desperate need of assistance. I found this forum via google, so I'm hoping you all can help. I have a Winchester Model 94 (post 64... I think it's a 1978) 30-30 Top Eject. I'm missing a cartridge guide screw. Everyone in the world seems to be out of them. I see Numrich has cartridge guide screws for the .44 Mag version. Can anyone tell me if these screws are interchangeable between calibers/models?
This rifle has a lot of sentimental value, so I'm trying everything I can to get it functional again. ANY help finding a part would GREATLY be appreciated. Thanks folks.

That be it! And let this be a lesson to always put small parts in a container while taking things apart. Geez...

and if you take out the trigger assembly, slip a nail or paper clip through the hole at the rear of the hammer spring.
Otherwise, if you trip the trigger, the whole thing will fly off into the next room.
By the way, is Browning running out of '94 parts? I have ordered from them twice and no problems, but the last time was about three years ago.

and Welcome to THE Forum.
Yes, the screw from the 44Mag will work in the .30-30. The rail itself won't, but the guide screws from all post '64s are the same. Pre-'64s guide screws won't.

Re: Winchester Model 94 parts help
Speaking of too many screws. There are two screws on the left side of the receiver. These don't have any function other than filling holes? Some sort of bracket is available to mount optics on the top eject? Did I understand that right? I would never even consider putting any optics on it as I don't think the rifle should... just curious.

Those two screws are close together near the top rear of the receiver, yes?tmaurer wrote:Speaking of too many screws. There are two screws on the left side of the receiver. Yes, they are for "optics". You might find that you love the "optics" for those holes! They are not for a scope, or "carry handle" as we call them here, they are for aperture sights which are very appropriate for a vintage levergun. Do a search for "peep sight" on the forum and you'll see the options. If you are going to shoot the gun a bunch (you should) a peep improves both accuracy and fast target acquisition.

Re: Winchester Model 94 parts help
.
The two small screws (about 1/2" apart) in the upper/rear left receiver wall are the plug screws for the factory receiver peep sight prep (D/T).
Remove them to mount any peep sight (Williams, Lyman, etc) designated for a top-eject Model 94. ( a front sight blade taller than issue might be needed to attain zero with a peep.)
(My M94 Trapper dates from 1978, lower rifle, below, with a Henry .22)
If/when you decide to install a receiver peep sight, it's a good idea to remove the rear bbl open/iron sight for a clean sight picture - fill the open dovetail in the bbl with a slot filler blank, either commercially-made, or one easily filed up from the male dovetail section of any old longleaf rear bbl sight.

Re: Winchester Model 94 parts help
Thanks for the info everyone. I had no idea they made peep sights for the rifle. I will definitely look into those. Yes I DO plan on shooting this rifle. It was my first deer rifle that was passed down from my dad. I guess I have a big love of the 30-30 as I've used one my entire life (and still hunt with one).
I don't believe in "wall hangers". Just my opinion. If I have a gun, I'll shoot it regardless of value or how pretty it is. Definitely look into the sights. That would make for a nice little addition.

Sweet! You just save me like $5! Thanks for the tip!Griff wrote:Yes, the screw from the 44Mag will work in the .30-30. The rail itself won't, but the guide screws from all post '64s are the same. Pre-'64s guide screws won't.
Re: Winchester Model 94 parts help
Yeah, I'm pretty sure they are different. The last issue of the Winchester Parts List shows a different part number for the 44 Rem Mag/45 Colt/44-40 than all the others. So does MGW. U344912040 vs U344911970 Might just be length.tmaurer wrote:Sweet! You just save me like $5! Thanks for the tip!Griff wrote:Yes, the screw from the 44Mag will work in the .30-30. You might want to give MGW a call. Great guys. They have been doing ALL the USRAC Winchester repairs for USRAC forever and they got every single part that was owned by USRAC.

Re: Winchester Model 94 parts help
Hrummpfff! Never noticed that before. No change in the receiver, so the thread size & pitch is the same... As you say, maybe a tad long for the slightly wider cartridge, and resultant thinner guides.Tycer wrote:Yeah, I'm pretty sure they are different. Five BUCKS. In the 2005 parts/price list they were $1.00, in the 2008 they were only $1.50. What's MWG want?

FWIW, since the .44 Mag has thinner guides than a .30-30, requiring shorter screws than the .30-30 guide(s), it translates into them being too short to thread when trying to attach .30-30 guide(s).
IOW, since .30-30 guides are thicker than .44 Mag guides, they require a longer screw.
