Rossi difficulty, ........Help Steve

Post by Morgan »

Have a Legacy Rossi 44 rem mag. 20" short rifle and it shoots the mag tube loose after three to five rounds. Constantly, repeatedly, time after time.
I force the mag tube back in retighten everything I can and it still does it. It was purchased new in October and have maybe 40 rounds down the pipe, all factory 44 mag and 44 spl. any and all assistance will be appreciated, recommendations?

Thanks, Ken

Is it the one with the 'tube loading' feature? That one I looked at, but the little nubbin that keeps the tube from popping forward just looked too fragile; the .454 Casull threads in place, and seems better secured.

It did look like you could work with it and rebuild it or modify it to be more reliable, though, so I suspect someone here may have fixed theirs and can help.

If it isn't the 'tube loader' one, then where is it loosening - at the receiver?

AJMD.........Thanks for the reply, It is a standard Rossi 92, the magazine tube slides into the frame. The recoil is causing it to back out, after about 3 to 5 rnds the tube is sticking out about 1/2" in front of the barrel. I wack it back in (a technical term), tighten the cap screws and the mag cap screw as tight as they will go and...............there it goes again.

Help!

Thanks ..............Ken :(

Sounds like a standard carbine right? If that's the case the cheap fix would be to turn the tube around and re-drill for the plug and fit to the band screws. If the plug screw isn't long enough to reach the bottom of the barrel you may need a longer one. Replacements are a stuff shoot as to whether they will be long enough. Might have to D&T for and over-size. Once you get everything fitted up, take it apart and silicone the tube into the forwood re-installing before it sets.

Is the tube only held in place by friction, plus the cap screw protruding into the notch in the barrel?

If that's the case, and the screw isn't long enough, like Nate said, getting a longer screw might be helpful; even if you can't get one as a 'gun' part, some work with a dremel tool, file, and/or drill press can probably turn a stock Ace Hardware screw (probably metric) into what you need.

I had an issue with my 1886 that might be of interest.
The stud for the sling was mounted on the magazine tube. That gradually pulled the dovetails loose. Loose enough for the cap screw to slide out of the hole under the barrel.

That is more of a problem for sure. You may need to start with a new mag tube so the detent/notch for the hanger pin is fresh, do the longer plug screw and make some longer forend cap screws that will seat into the sides of the mag tube to help hold it.
