I sure miss mornings like that. Memories of how the snow crunches underfoot on a hard packed path, the occasional crack of an Aspen, the air searing down ones nostrils, the loudness of sounds and how they carry in the dense air, Jack Frost nipping at my fingers and toes, wood splitting in a single blow of the axe.

Interesting to see that freighter moving out. I didn't think they were running this late. I imagine once he gets out a ways there will be open water. I wonder if it is going through the Soo?

-35, eh?

That's COLD, pardner......

Yesterday I saw -17, and this morning was -8.
High is supposed to be -2 or something today.
Coldest and snowiest December that I can remember
in central Maine. My woodpile will not make it the
whole winter unless the weather moderates. I'll have
to get more.

Pitchy that's the reason I moved from Big Piney WY 5 years ago, I worked outside every day and at 9000'. Winter temps would be -30 / -40 for weeks at a time and after a heart attack and two back fusions the doc said I should move down slope. So now I live in the bannana belt of north east Wyoming.

Stay warm my friend and I enjoyed your phone call.

Thanks pards, in a way I like the real cold , it sure is quiet and peaceful but I do feel for those that have to be out in it.

At -35 it is pretty hard to throw water. You start by throwing water and end up hitting what you threw at with ICE.

A little nippy here today too. -25F thankfully not much wind. My wood is also taking a beating but I still have 6 cords in my garage and another 10 outside while not real dry, some of it would do if needed. I should be ok with what I have inside now though. Only went through 3 cords so far so I am pretty much the same as normal re consumption of wood. My oil furnace tripped on flame sensor last night so it was only 64 in the house this morning. looked at what was going on and it seems the ignition electrodes are not lighting the oil. Was going to try and adjust them but thought better of it and called for service. The wood carries the heat all day so it only comes on during the night if the fire goes down. Service man said he would be by today sometime. The joys of winter.

Its very cold here too! 36 degrees right now and getting down to 19 tonight. That's cold for MS.

I spent 7 years in MN, so I know what cold is - makes you really appreciate it when spring finally arrives!! Of course, the skeeters also like it and will be ravenous. But then they die and you do get a couple months on nice weather

Dang Pitchy, I feel for ya man. When I worked at the grocery warehouse our icecream freezers only went down to -20. It's 73 here now with a cold front moving in tomorrow that will take us down to the low 50's.

Pitchy, are you going to have enough wood to take you through to spring?

Wood pile is certainly taking a beating. Had the week off from Christmas to New Years day. Was planning on cutting up some firewood, but too darn cold. Snow is too deep to get it for this year, just wanted to start on next winters pile. I did some snowshoeing , but mostly worked on some guns that needed attention and played taxi driver for the kids.

We haven't been above about -8 for a couple of days now.
We're using lots of wood and pellets. Not so much oil, as
mostly that's for hot water. Still.....

Mind you, other folks have it colder, but it IS a wee bit
unusual for the cold to go on like this in central Maine.

I got a new sleeping bag 6 or 8 years ago - rated to -20.
Soooo, only one way to find out if they're tellin' the truth. :o
I slept out under my canoe (on sawhorses, the boat was!),
at about -15, and the bag worked! Went winter camping with
the boy Scouts after that, and it worked GREAT! :-)

WOW! If you take a pee outside does it freeze before hitting the snow? Coldest I've been is 20 below in Idaho winter of '82. Only place I see ice now is in da freezer. Last night it got down to 65 degrees, had to wear my thick hoodie to bed and a beanie.

It was getting down to 7 degrees here Friday couple weeks ago when the furnace blower motor quit. Couldn't get an HVAC guy until the following Monday. Since we're set up with Graingers, I called their after hours number and had them check their inventory for the motor and capacitor I needed. They had it, so I went down that weekend and picked it up, took it home and installed it. As I was finishing up, the neighbor called and invited us over for an Elk Lasagna dinner...... :-D

+21 this morning at 0600 when I went out to get the paper wearing no shirt, house shoes and gym shorts. Wifey shakes her head and says I'm nuts for going out in the cold like that. Told her I wasn't planning on staying outside and anyway this is not cold. I've been cold before and this ain't it.

Saw on the news that some folk out East will experience -50F over the next couple of days. Coldest since 1994? How will folk in older wooden, un-insulated houses survive? In my wife's country they recommend putting up a tent inside if the power goes out in the middle of winter. Trick is to live in the tent. Crazy hot weather over Australia. There is some extreme weather happening globally at the moment.

When I was in school in the early 70s in Flagstaff AZ, we had a few nights -35, no wind, and a few unofficial (but consistent) reports of -46 and -48 those same nights. I can vouche, yes cold! To the east 100 miles in our White Mts, we had a now defunct US weather station in a half-horse village that was even colder then IIRC, and fairly regularly alternated with Gunnison for coldest in the lower 48.

When I woke up Saturday morning it was 6 degrees.
This morning (Monday) it was 56 degrees.
Tomorrow is supposed to be in the teens.

Ugh... I can deal with the cold, but the up and down is killing me. My eyes feel like they're coming out of my head. :(
Slow is just slow.
