Ever had the smell of gunpowder trigger a memory?

Post by EdinCT »

Yesterday I stepped out back and shot my 32 Special loaded with 20 gr of SR4759 and a Lyman 311008 115 gr bullet patched with two wraps of 20 lb paper.( shoots good by the way)
When I opened the lever the first time the smell of the burnt powder took me back to the first time I shot my 30-30 at fourteen years old over 40 years ago. The memory was has clear has could be! I don't think my regular loads of 30-31 or 748 ever smelled like that.
Wish I listened to my Dad and never traded that rifle. He always said they're not eating anything.

Get a good sniff of it then, because 4759 is going away forever.

Personally, I love the smell of black and hoppes. But we all have our favorites.

Yes I have. So many different memories associated with it. Most are very good ones.

gun powder can remind me of ancient times shooting or hunting with my Dad and my brothers...another close friend of mine tells me that gun-powder always takes him back to the Mekong Delta...he's says nothing more, and I don't press him... :'

Always....... when I shoot my 22 to this day the smell instantly reminds me of shooting on my Great Grand Mothers farm back in the 60's.....Nothing like the smell of a hot summer day shooting 22's back in the 60's
There must be a ton of 22 lead in that yard.

Whoa there, Brent. What have you heard? This is one of the few that Grafs shows in stock, both 1 lb and 8 lb. I still have about half a keg, but do I need to stock up?

from another website...

Hodgdon Powder, in an email signed by Chris Hodgdon, and dated December 15, 2013, has given notice that the following Powders will be discontinued this year:

4756, 4759, 7625 and PB.

The email further stated, "but there are many reasons why we are discontinuing
including outdated technology, high manufacturing costs and low sales."

Bummer!

PB in a paper shell is another smell from my youth, but I haven't bought any in years. I will buy some 4759 if I see it though.

Yep. I had an idea the other day to have scented candles made that smell like a smokey O/U shotgun that was just broke open and the whisps of smoke rising from the empty chambers. That would be better than the bacon scented candles!

Just shotgun powder from paper shells. Every now and then I'll blast one out back just so I can smell the empty case. Reminds me of the late sixties, pheasant and squirrel hunting with my dad and brother.-----6

Two memories especially stand out:

Pre-1966 living in Japan and visiting my grandparents in the country on weekends and the smell of fireworks in the evening.

Young teenager going to the shooting range with my dad and the guy next to us shooting blackpowder.

LOVE the smell, and the images forever remain burned into my psyche.
