Lyman Sight Question

Does anyone know the size or specs of the set screw used as an elevation stop on the Lyman Receiver Sight?

Thanks, but no. What I need is a slightly longer one. My elevation setting is about 1/16th higher than the length of the set screw.

Take it (the screw,not the rifle) to the hardware store and match it up.

I have been trying, but I have yet to find any local hardware stores with a set screw small enough and or a way to measure that small of a thread to get the proper diameter and thread pitch. I am sure I can order one once I get the specs.

I took mine out of a Lyman 66A sight. It measures...
~0.385 inches in length.
~0.097 in diameter.

My thread gauges weren't fine enough but a 28tpi seemed to match(?) even though we know that's way too coarse.

Looking in my machinery handbook the closest match is a 3-56. A #3 screw measures...
0.099 in diameter and comes in coarse (48 tpi) or fine (56 tpi)

Fastenal lists one. They may not be as hard to find as I thought.

I would consider getting a SHORTER front sight. The higher the sight elevator goes in the base the weaker it gets.

Wouldn't you need a shorter front sight to keep from having to raise the rear too much? Might be much easier than finding a 3-48 or 3-56 screw

First time for everything! I had to study on that a while.

Take it in and you can just hold it tight against a similar-diameter bolt, and you will find immediately if the thread pitch is the same. If all the little 'V's match, the bolts will both mesh together perfectly; then you have found your pitch, whether 'US' or 'Metric'. Once you have done that, you then know what nuts to try (ones that are that pitch, and close in diameter). You can pretty much tell by feel/fit to get the right diameter.

I do it all the time at the local ACE hardware - no 'gauges' needed...!!!

I didn't think of it until this morning that I could have dug through my salvage to see if I had anything longer. I doubt I would have a matte black one, though. Good deal. Best forum in the 'verse.
