What's YOUR Dream Gun ?

Post by Pete44ru »

I was asked: What gun would you like to have, even if it's not made, and money's not an object ?

I would like two actually, on the same, new action.

A stainless steel Marlin 39a-type, but a little wider/thicker in the receiver (but not as thick as the M1894), chambered in .22 WRM and .32 H&R, with a 22 1/2" tapered stainless octagon barrel, Skinner peeps, and button mags that had a Browning-type inside tube latch built into the end knob.

Any other dreamers ?

About the same thing -

Marlin stainless 1894 type action guns in:

.327 Mag/.32 H&R or maybe .32-20 (maybe slightly scaled down action)
.454 Casull or .480 Ruger (scaled up action obviously)

Those, and of course a helicopter-mounted set of twin-50 miniguns, for days when I just want to make LOTS of NOISE...

Pete, I thought long and hard on your question but the only guns that tickel me are the old ones that have already been made. Maybe if my life depended on a rifle, a stainless steel Model 1895 chambered in 280 Remington might fit the bill.-----------Sixgun

A pre-64 Model 94 Win. 30/30 With the factory open sights, but also a magic scope and mounts that were never there, except when a shot presented itself, where the range was over 50yds. And of course dissapeared again instantly after the hammer fell, only to appear again, if needed after I jacked the empty out. And no an angle eject won't get it, as I want a pre-64, and I want the scope to only be there, for the moment I need it, if I need it.

You did say dream rifle, right! :)

Any gun?

But only if someone else promised to feed it for me!

Otherwise, I'd take a Winchester Model 1873, "One of a Hundred" (actually more rare than the "One of a Thousand" guns), in pristine condition... :D

One that hits where I want (as opposed to where I THINK I'm aiming :? ), doesn't need to be reloaded, doesn't beat me up with recoil, and is always caliber and size appropriate for the job at hand.

I also want a unicorn.

I wonder which I'll get first? :?

I'm in line with Jeremy in getting a Shiloh Sharps....45/70 would be nice. I like the 26" tube on Scott T's Kate...like everything about that rifle, but may go with a straight grip stock.

I have drooled over the Sharps rifle's since they were brought out again back in the early 80's. There is nothing as classy as the Sharps 1874, though the Spencer has always had me drooling as well.

I hate to say it, but I have darned near anything I ever wanted  A 1936 Model 71, an 1891 '86 in 45-90, a Model 64 deluxe in 25-35, a couple of Marlin Cowboys in .44 mag.

But if there is one other thing I would LOVE to have, I reckon it would be a Marlin Cowboy in 25-35!

I have three, er...uh four, er...well, I'll only post three or four

Marlin Guide Gun SS in 45-70 with a trigger and action job. Rear peep sight and a detachable scope that I could remove and still use the sight.

Winchester 1876 in 45-70. Preferrably stainless, but blue will do. Tang peep sight, action and trigger job.

Marlin 39a in .357 or the new .327 Federal. Lyman receiver sight and action and trigger job.

Hamilton Bowen custom Ruger Blackhawk companion for the aforementioned .357 or .327

I've thought about this long and hard for many a moon, and will only list the top TWO on my list:

Iron Framed Henry in .45 Colt

1885 Wincester in .32-40

The balance of the list is longer than posts I've made.

I'd like a 25-35 also. Don't know why. I'd take it in either Marlin or Winchester with a 24" barrel. After that, I'm not sure. Maybe a Marlin in 375 JDJ in the 1895 model (no safety, WWG trigger).
I should stop there because the list will go on and on.
Oh, almost forgot, Marlin in 356 Win. or equivalent (like a 35 cal version of the 308MX).
Okay, now I'm done.

I would like a stainless take down 1886 trapper carbine in 45/70. Octagonal barrel. Bolt peep. Two barrel bands. Front sight dovetailed into barrel.

After that I would like a Marlin 39 stainless takedown with a 16" barrel.

Is that so much to ask for?

Yeah, they're illegal for Deer in Indiana too... OTOH, I can use one for about anything else.

I've got a 16x16x9.3x72R, but the cartridges are about $3ea to buy. It's also not a "normal" 16ga. Chambers are short.

If I could build one, tmy hardest choice would be between 12x12 or 20x20... over .357 of course.

I had no idea the 32-40 was making such a comeback. There seem to be quite a few 32-40 guns listed on the usual sites ... both new and vintage. There was some good info on the 32-40 in the older "Legacy of Leverguns" publication and I've started to keep an eye out for a 94 in 32-40 as of late.

I don't know if I have a dream gun, but I could certainly use a 50-110 shotshell barrel for my 71.

Those Browning high grades are stunning guns. Did it come D&T out of the box for a receiver sight or did you have to D&T it for the Williams?

Any Marlin leveraction. I don't really like anything else. I would like to have a Ruger #3 in .30-40 Krag. A really nice Leman or Hawken replica in .58 caliber would be fun too.

I have been following this thread and thinking about my "dream rifle"...it must be a rifle, don't you know! I am lucky to have been a gun nut kid in the 50's when today's high dollar classic rifles were just old guns that sold for $25 to $50. I bought, sold, and traded several score of what are now "dream rifles", for the younger set.

I now have about all the rifles, and handguns I will ever want. I can't really think of anything that my soul just burns for. A good Holland and Holland Royal Ejector grade double rifle in 375 H & H would be nice to have. But, if I had enough money to have a new one built, I would have it build in 30-30.... wouldn't that be a hoot? A Holland and Holland Royal Ejector thutty..thutty. Now that would make me smile :D

Or.... If I could find a machinist good enough, a custom left hand Krag in 30-40 built up in a high grade sporter. That is a rifle they would bury with me.

I can dream about lots of things. I don't know that there are any that I
need, but there are some that I would like to have and some that I would
like to have and would actually use.

1) Winchester 86, .45-70, CCH
2) Ed Brown 1911
3) AR15 match rifle for NRA highpower rifle competition
4) Ruger blackhawk converted to 500 Linebaugh by John himself
5) Here's one that I thought about building- start with a S&W 696,
get the 5" non-underlug barrel from the limited edition 686,
rebore it to .44 and put it on the 696
6) Ruger Montado 3.75", round butt it, add new front sight and S&W
J-frame adjustable rear sight.

I had to have it D/T for the Williams 71 receiver sight and the gunsmith that did it was the same one who mounted the Williams 94/36 on my 94 (which did not require D/T) - he made it clear then he was reluctant to do that on the Buffalo Bill Commemorative - you can imagine how he felt about the Hi Grade 95 - he made certain I kept the original open rear sight but, I sold a gun in 1940 and have regretted it ever since and won't do that again.

Anyways, I've done business with him for nearly three decades and we've come to be good friends despit my shooting leverguns he thinks should be in special glass cases.
