What are your favorite single actions by rank. Quite a few of them out there these days.

1. 1st generation Colts w/ 4 3/4" barrels in 44-40. (or should I say Colt Frontier Six Shooter?)
These are my favorites but I like my 7 1/2" 45s and right now I'm playing with a 41 Colt and a 38-40 Bisley. Bisley is 7 1/2" and very accurate. I never liked how they looked or felt in my hand but I manage to shoot them very well. They grow on you.

2. 2nd gen Colts and maybe USFAs should go about here somewhere.

3. 3rd gen Colts I still like better than the clones or Ruger

4. Rugers are great but the older generation Vaqueros feel huge in my hand and the new ones, well I don't own one so I'll not judge.

1. Freedom Arms
2. Ruger 'New Model'
3. Ruger Pre-Transfer-Bar [ :o ]

I think my Ruger Bisley 45 Colt/ACP is the most practical and fun handgun I own. Pairs up right nice with a Marlin 1894 in 45 Colt, and my ParaOrdnance 1911.

.

My fave is one I've kept (with one other), after years of owning/shooting/hunting with a baker's half-dozen center & rimfire SA revolvers.

It's an OM Ruger Bearcat.

The only other, I've kept, is an NAA Black Widow Combination LR/WRM.

(One of my faves, Cimarron described below)

Not a problem or even druthers with a one. In truth, all after #1 are close seconds, and depending on mood of the day or week all have occupied the #1 spot.
Colt design in general, 1st, 2nd and "4th" Colts, USFAs and Ubertis, but have a special affection for the every day utility and versatility of the Rugers.
Like picking between kids or pups, but if had to choose, among mine:

- Colt SAA, 5.5" .44 Sp, scarce (not a .44-40 convertible) uncataloged "4th" (late 3rd), CCH, awfully nice piece and "just because" - My only Colt. Gotta have at least one!
- USFA Rodeo "antiqued" .44 Sp , 4-3/4", slick piece
- Cimarron P antiqued .44 Sp 5.5", my favorite fondler, fashioned as a direct 'aged' copy of the Colt above
- Ruger New Vaquero Montado ,357 and Sheriff .44 Sp w/Montado hammer, stainless twins -ultimate fising and camping SAs
- Ruger Single Six, 4-5/8" .32 H&R Mag "Vaquerito" reg (XR3 Red) and Birdshead, most fun guns I've ever shot, antecedants of my first on-my-own (non inherited) gun, a 5.5" adj sight .32 Single Six, one of the first out of the chute in 1984
- Ruger Vaquero .44 Mag, 5.5", "CCH," nicknamed "Thumper"

Reckon my favorite single action is my Colt SAA .45 Colt 5 1/2 inch I bought in 1959 made in 1957 with 12 rounds fired through it when I got it. Still makes a good comfortable carry gun.

Some of mine. My favorite is the Colt .357 Second Gen pictured with the deer. I didn't use it to kill the deer but I took it along for good luck and as you can see I got lucky, so I named the Colt "old Lucky", One of the few guns, I ever actually named.

Uberti 1873 Open-top in .44 Special
Uberti Schofield No. 3 in .44 Special (reamed from .44 Russian)
Ruger New Vaquero in .357

Fixing to part with the Schofield, beautiful gun and very accurate, but too long for me to use and a I don't want to cut it down. If anyone knows where there's a pair of the Lipsy's Ruger New Vaquero in the same finish and barrel length in 44. Special for sale please let me know. Blue or SS doesn't matter, neither does the barrel length as long as they're the same.

All of my favorite single actions are stainless new model Rugers.
I am torn between .44 Spl., .44 Mag., and .45 Colt.
Except for a 5-1/2" Clements Custom .44 Spl New Vaquero, the others all sport 4-5/8" barrels.
Since I handload, any of the mentioned calibers is equally satisfactory.

If I had to pick just one, I would grab the closest one and never look back.

Numero Uno is a Colt circa 1962 Buntline Special in 22LR my grandfather bought new in 1962 . Still have the box , papers and original grips as well as a set of walnut target style grips my grandfather carved .

Numero Dos is a Ruger Single Six in 22LR circa late 50's early 60's that my father also got in the early 60"s LNIB from an old friend . Still have the papers and box for this one as well .

Numero Tres was a Ruger Blackhawk circa 1957 in 44 MAG I used to have .

I have never had the pleasure of owning a Colt SAA.
My favorite single Action was a Beretta Stampede 4 3/4 " barrel in 45 LC. Light handy and well timed.
My second favorite is a Ruger 50th Anniversary 44 Mag flat top.
Least favorite was a Pietta in 45 LC, had a lot of cylinder play and timing issues.

There were some Single-Six sized 32-20 conversions from what I'm told. Dunno if Buckeye did them or not.

Mine is the same frame as a 357 Blackhawk.

Not that I've played with enough Single Actions to have a solid sample to work from, I do think that 2 of the 3 I've had certainly qualify:

Freedom Arms Casull
Ruger Old Army

But I had to sell them.

The one I have now is nice enough though.

It's pretty much the only sidearm I carry in the woods any more. Mostly because my woods walking area is ML Only.

The ACP cylinder is for "emergencies"... though I'm thinking about getting a .45 Colt cylinder to use instead. Easier to put shot cups in.

Re: Favorite Single Actions

Post by flightsimmer »

I've got a 3-1/2" Cimarron Arms Model "P" junior in 38 Special made by Uberti that is my favorite single action firearm.
It's got the same grip frame of a full sized model P but the revolver frame is smaller and more comfortable for my hands.
With a six o'clock hold on a 50 ft. B2 target at 25 yards it hits dead center of the bullseye with all six shots of +P ammo off of sand bags which are kind of stiff for plinking, so I use standard 38 specials for that .
Timing is perfect and it is as slick as a whistle.
I did install a lightened Wolf main spring kit.
10mm, when you care enough to send the very best.
