Suggestions, removing scope base adhesive
Recently picked up a late 1960s manufacture Marlin 336. Someone along the way "glued" a scope base to the top of the receiver. Any recommendations on removing the adhesive without harming the finish on the top of the receiver? I was able to easily remove the scope base. The remnants of the adhesive is present. Thank you, 1886.

Heat. Then scrap it gently with brass or even steel wool. Or scrape it hard and reblue.

.
With a sharp pocket knife blade, cut a wooden tongue depressor ( craft shop, like A.C.Moore, Michael's, etc) in half at a 45-degree angle, which results in a sharp scraper that's guaranteed not to scratch the receiver.
Many adhesives, like Loc-Tite, are actually brittle enough to be scraped off, & then the residue can be removed with lacquer thinner (on a rag).

Scraping might benefit from freezing but I think heat will do the job, even if you have to burn it off.

Most of these adhesives are hydrocarbon based formulas.
Methelthelkeyton will disrupt molecular continuity, scrape with toungue depressor as pete says.
