Parker DH 10 gauge circa 1889
Won a rather well used and somewhat abused Parker DH 10 gauge on Gunbroker today . Got it at what I thought was a fairly cheap price even though it needs some work . Gun was made in 1889 , has a damascus barrel and is 30" full and full .
A few pics from the GB auction . They aren't to great . I'll get funds in the mail Priority monday and hopefully the fellow in Florida will have the funds and get it out to me before the end of the week . With a possibility of seeing it monday or tuesday a week from now .
My plan is to check it out and see if I'll feel safe shooting my light 2 7/8" 10 gauge loads . And if I am I'll try it for a round on the skeet and or trap fields . After that I plan on patterning it with handloaded #0 and #3 buckshot .
Now I need to figure some way to get a decent Parker 8 gauge hammerless !

Re: Parker DH 10 gauge circa 1889
Very nice. I had a Scott double hammer 10 from about the same era and it was a great gun to shoot. Mine was a heavy fouler so I loaded it with stout loads of black and a good bunch of lead and had fun with pheasants, geese, ducks and clays. Yours should be much the same.
Re: Parker DH 10 gauge circa 1889
I have a more bird gun W&C Scott 10 that was made in 1881/1882 and I shoot SR7625 in it with very good results on clay targets , dove and deer !BrentD wrote:Very nice. Also have a circa 1890 LC Smith "Quality 2" 10 gauge that I shoot the same loads in . Used this ome for clays and deer as well !

Yeah, I saw those pictures when you posted earlier that is one sweet gun.
I haven't seen a Parker as old as 6's, at least I don't think so.
I don't have many pictures of mine with game before I sold it but let's see...

Older Parker hammer guns are not that difficult to find if you look . Old hammer lifter action guns pop up regularly , I however have not become addicted to external hammer guns quite yet although I do have two visible hammer drillings .BrentD wrote:Yeah, I saw those pictures when you posted earlier that is one sweet gun.

Very rarely do I venture into 'stuck-up know it all land' anymore.
Seems ones status is determined by the grade & number of Parker's one owns.
It's not all of them, just that normal few that unfortunately sways the tone of a forum.
Thanks, finally got to vent that one

Oops!
Sorry that you have had bad experiences on the PGCA forum.
So far, it has been all positive for me, but then I only visit there about once a month for information or to post a Parker bird shooting story.
Am also not a Parker collector, but a hunter who likes to shoot Parker shotguns, as I have since a teenager, which was a long time ago .
6pt , keep us posted on your experiences with your 10 ga.

I collect , accumulate , shoot and hunt with all three of the old American greats (Parker , Fox and LC Smith) as well as several english and european doubles . When I was a youngster you started with a single barrel and then went to a double . Semi auto's and pumps were not allowed in the house . And if one wanted an O/U it better have been a Browning Superposed although we never had any of them until perhaps 20 years ago .crs wrote:Oops!

When ya get the barrels all spiffy'd up, post some close-ups please.

Re: Parker DH 10 gauge circa 1889
After it gets here and I look it over a bit I may make a decision over time to redo the whole gun . I am 100% sure the buttstock is not original .casastahle wrote:I second that "keep us posted".

So I think I wanna either find a nice old #3 frame buttstock or possibly have a totally new stock and forend made for the gun . Also I have thoughts of sending the barrels off to the fellow in Michigan I believe that has the excellent following in that type of thing . I have some folks who can re color case the action but I'm skeptical about what it takes to prep the action to re color case as I'm sure it will effect the engraving . Actually I'd be happy with the action in the silver if I can make it come out alright engraving wise .
One things for sure , if I can have it shootable as is before hunting season i will put forth the effort to waylay a deer with #0 or #3 buckshot !

Re: Parker DH 10 gauge circa 1889
At this point I have Parker's in 10 , 12 and 16 gauge . Maybe at some point I can add an 8 gauge and possibly a 28 !
Have Fox's in 12 , 16 and 20 although I'd like another 16 in a Sterlingworth .
In Smith's I have a 10 and 12's , over time I'd like a nice Ideal grade 16 .
It's a viciouse cycle !
About 20 years ago I was eat up with shotguns' bird hunting and shotgun sports . Then perhaps 10 years ago I got eaten up with Marlin's cast bullets and using them on deer . Now I'm evolving back into the shotgun things although I HOPE I do not get involved in the shotgun games like I was before .

6. Just keep your ears open and listen for people in your area with private sales etc . I just got a call about an hour ago from a member of the two gunclubs I belong to telling me there was going to be a private tag sale for a deceased member this weekend of his 240+ gun collection . So as you may expect I plan to be there saturday when they open the door .

Re: Parker DH 10 gauge circa 1889
I have a Model 1889 Remington 10-gauge SXS hammer gun. Nice and tight and bores in pretty good shape with some minor pitting. I wish someone made affordable brass shells in 10 gauge. I know I can get good ones from Rocky Mountain Cartridge, but they ain't cheap.
Re: Parker DH 10 gauge circa 1889
If you factor in that they will never wear out (the shells), then they are pretty reasonable. And you can have your own headstamp.Bill in Oregon wrote:I have a Model 1889 Remington 10-gauge SXS hammer gun. Nice and tight and bores in pretty good shape with some minor pitting. Re: Parker DH 10 gauge circa 1889
I had about 30 old Winchester brass shells for the 10 and sold them a few months back . I do just fine with the new Remington plastic hulls after I trim them on the bandsaw .

Re: Parker DH 10 gauge circa 1889
I have the same Remington 1889 as BillinOregon; inherited it from my grandfather although it was actually HIS father's gun. 32" steel barrels choked Cyl/Imp Mod (more or less). The Cyl. barrel may have been opened up to use ball loads; some came with it.
I have found www.doublegunshop.com/BBS to be a very civil site where newbies can and do ask questions with a minimum of snark from the regulars. They also have a number of active posters who handload for and shoot Damascus 10 guage doubles a lot, so there is help on restoration and handloading there.

Re: Parker DH 10 gauge circa 1889
Got some buckshot loaded for the Parker last night !
All were #0 . Loaded some as I have in the past without buffer and loaded a few with buffer for comparison .
I think over the weekend I may do the same thing with 000 , 00 , 1 and 3 buck .

Well I just finished loading buckshot loads in anticipation of the Parker !
000 , 00 , 0 , 1 and 3 buck .
Loaded at least two of each size without buffer and atleast two of each size with buffer .
Now I'll get 52 rounds loaded with 8 1/2 birdshot . Then I can shoot a round of skeet and a round of trap .

Re: Parker DH 10 gauge circa 1889
Well the Parker arrived today !
And it was broken at the wrist . Also when I looked at the water table it wasn't a DH but rather a lesser grade EH . So instead of having a pointer on one side and a setter on the other it had some birds like my 16 gauge GH . !
So the guns going back !
Oh yeah the gun also came to me missing the firing pins !
The folks who sold it have been graciouse to say the least , they have Fedex coming to pick it up and are reimbursing the cost of the gun plus the shipping cost .

Re: Parker DH 10 gauge circa 1889
So life goes on and I still don't have a 10 gauge Parker hammerless gun !
Incidently the action is in way better condition then the Gunbroker pictures showed . They had also said the inside of the barrels were pitted and they are but more of what I'd call frosted which is way better then I anticipated .
