Has anyone used Buffalo Bore's Heavy 30-30 190 grain?

Post by daisygordoninc »

I'm curious about the Buffalo Bore 30-30 Heavy 190 grain.
Has anyone out there used this for hunting heavy animals,
elk, moose, bear ? What kind of performance would you
expect or did you get?

I've never tried them. What problem are they supposed to solve?

I don't think there's too many guys here who can afford that ammo. It's got to be $50 a box. What Buffalo Bore did was what the old timers used to do in the old days......load the 190 gr. .303 Savage bullet into the 30-30 case. (I don't know the bullet Tim uses...it's obviously a good one) From what I have read, it was an excellent performer on large game. Frank Marshall used to write how using the heavier bullet in the 30-30 made it a decent close range elk load.

The same can be done if you cast bullets. This bullet is from an old Cramer mould, made back shortly after the war. It casts a bullet that weighs 190 grains...with lube and gas check. I use it in the 06 but it's child's play to make it work in the 30-30 and a dose of 4064 or 4350 to get the velocity.---6

BB uses a Hawk bullet, I have load hdy 180 RN and used them but a good cast 173 or 180 works on elk & bear order you some beartooth 173 gr cast and load them up. danny

I like the BB ammo... but affording it is the issue. As was mentioned, rolling your own is often the better solution. I mimic the BB 180gr Heavy .357 with a 180gr WFNGC cast bullet over LilGun. Ballistics are comparable to the BB at 1/10 the price.

Still, I DO keep a handful of the BB ammo around for questions of "non OEM ammo" (in those places where there are very tight tolerances for the use of .357 to hunt medium game... )

I haven't looked, but I would bet that RanchDog has a mold for a 190 grain bullet like that. Gotta love the versatility of the .30-30!

Thanks, that helps much. I know there have been some really good results with heavy bullets with the 30-30 but never had any real info. on them before. Great to be part of such a well informed team.

I have heard a few "old guys" swear we never needed another gun after the 30-30. It is responsible for kills on almost any animal you can name. I wonder why I have so many "other guns". Need to get my 4th gun safe.

Of all the people that I know who own the RCBS 30 cal, 180 gr. mould, all tell me that the bullet weighs 190 gr as cast. The uses are mostly for silhouette and knocking down the 200 M rams.

Yeah, but that's so that a hit "anywhere" on the ram will knock it over... a 150 in the upper quarter will do the same... :P But it does narrow your available target!

Hey, I resemble that remark.

As a friend once said to me at a match where he was my spotter,he said that I was using the whole target; on the nose, mid front leg, one inch in from the edge of the rump, etc., etc., etc. However once in a while I manage a center hit too. And oh yes, there are many misses too. I mostly use a 38-55 so it really doesn't matter where the hit is.

The CBA made a CD of the collected works of Frank Marshall JR.

Several articles on Heavy Cast bullets in the 30-30 on this CD

The CD is excellent and cover's many cartridges with cast bullets.

For what it's worth, in his book on the Winchester 94, Fadala also mentions his results with the 190 gr Savage bullet in the 30WCF. He likes it.

I was reading a Cal Rutstrum book and he quoted Townsend Whelen as having said " the 30/30 is a viable option as an all-around rifle"
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

As Steelbanger has posted, the RCBS 180 grain bullet drops heavy. Checked and lubed, mine weighs 195 grains. I, too, use mine for silhouettes, and the rams fall most of the time.

There is a youtube on hunting Alaska Moose with a 30-30. He used that ammo I think. The movie is a bit dreary as it is rather tedious and repetitive because of ads and such. He used a Winchester with iron sights and BB ammo. Sure dropped a big moose.
