A most unusual 1873 Winchester

Post by TedH »

We were watching a show on the History Channel, and they were talking about the guns that won the west. They showed a version of a '73 Winchester that I haven't seen before.

You would think they might have somebody consulting on the production of the show that had a little bit of knowledge on the subject matter. Apparently not. Nice work, History Channel.

Like most History Channel programs, the show is poorly researched and pathetically produced.

They were also talking about the M2, and the 50 BMG cartridge. With that discussion they showed a pair of 20mm rounds.

I was watching that program, and had to laugh out loud when I saw that nondescript rifle portrayed as a "Winchester 1873, the gun that won the West". It's not even a lever gun. A short time later they showed another "1873" rifle next to a Colt 1873 SAA "Peacemaker", which they misnamed "The Equalizer", chambered in the same caliber, .45 Colt. At least this rifle had a lever, but attached to a model 1892, which was first chambered in .45 Colt recently (2012).

The History Channel should stick to subjects they know better, like ancient aliens. [Is there a smiley symbol for "puke"?]

That is a Model 1903 22 Automatic Rifle. It shoots only 22 Automatic ammunition and the rifle has a cresent butt plate. The Model 63 replaced it about 1936 The 63 shoots 22 Long Rifle ammunition and has more of a shotgun style butt plate.

That is a SAD state of affairs. It's one thing for the so-called 'news' programs to mess 'gun stuff' up, but you'd think the 'History Channel' would get it.... :|
