Does your wife read the funnies?

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Just got to thinking about it, and my wife almost never reads the comics. Neither did my mom. Are the funnies really more of a guy thing? What's it like at your house?

If I could get a decent newspaper in my area, it would just be a guy thing. For all the reading my wife does, she never read the newspaper, preferring to get her news on the tube.

gave up on newsprint about a decade ago. Not enough value for cost.

I've got about a hundred comics I read online. Many are the same as what's carried in the papers.

There are several more that will *never* be carried in a newspaper, due to adult content, or the fact the author is doing much better without the hassle of dealing with the syndication.

I'll post my links if anyone's interested.

Well, after a career as a newspaper editor, I just have to have my newsprint with my morning coffee. But I admitted I was a dinosaur years ago. Not just Cretaceous either; I'm definitely Triassic!

My wife just skims most of the news portion and reads only a couple of the funnies. Our favorite is "Pickles", probably because we are old enough to relate to that couple.
I'm a real junkie for the local paper, been reading it daily ever since I could read. The funnies are the best part for me, other than "Doonesbury", which I won't read. Our paper is very small and getting smaller. Last year they cut out almost half the funnies, trying to save some money I guess.

Shasta, I, too am a big fan of "Pickles." More and more, it applies so directly to my life ...

We have a local free news paper. The Reflector from Battle Ground WA.
That is the only news paper I have read (on purpose) in at least ten years.
The Vancouver WA 'Columbian' and Portland OR 'Oregonian' (aka. the fish wrap)
are liberal rags not worth the effort and not even a good fish wrapper.

I might enjoy them.

PillHer does not read the funnies, but SightHunter will stand in front of me until I relent and give them to her. She loves jokes and cartoons.

You have an interesting observation there, Bill. No, my wife doesn't read the comics unless I find one I just have to show her. Yeah, usually it's "Pickles".

I am sure that the women around me have a great sense of humor. But life is much calmer if I assume that they don't and act accordingly.

Until the Dallas Morning News became a liberal rag, the only things I read were the comics, but I finally gave up and cancelled my subscription.

Here is one of my favorite comics now- on the Internet, naturally:

My bride of 56 years & I read the comics every day, but not in the newspaper. We read 'em on line, at Comics.com and Dilbert.com. We stopped our last newspaper subscription some years ago, because we couldn't believe what they printed. Sadly, even if you find one of the rare ones that's not blatantly left wing, a lot of their "news" comes from lefty sources like the NY Times, Washington Post and, of course, the wire services, none of which can be trusted. For the news, we trust Fox News Channel (truly "fair and balanced), and a few conservative internet sites like Breitbart.com and National Review Online.

BTW, our favorite 'toons are "Pickles" (naturally--it's us!) "Ballard Street, "Dilbert", "Monty" and a few others.

Since it was asked for, this is from my browser file of my current, mostly active comics. There are a couple not so active but you can follow the links, say One Way has links to Little Dee and Spacetrawler - both I *highly* recommend.

Note, these are titles, NOT hyperlinks. I can't figure out from the board software how to do this easily and some of these are adult, i.e. Questionable Content and Meltwater, so I don't want someone clicking and being offended. Just grab the title, copy 'n paste into a Google search and you'll get there.

Gocomics is a huge website with many, many syndicated comics. I do recommend setting up a log on there.

Note, there are also a lot of independents. For example, Shlock Mercenary (it's as funny as it's title!), is the work of one man but he's supporting his family and couple other ventures, all this off of a free, online comic strip.

So saying this is my point. Comics in a newspaper, along with the newspaper are pretty much done for. Trends for pretty much all print media are angled like the last couple minutes of the Titanic.
