Small Doe with the 32 Special
I went out back yesterday morning and around 8 am looked to my left and saw a fawn about 55 yards away. I then saw a doe off to the right of it and tried to ease around in the ladder stand. Well it made a faint metal sound in the cold and the deer got very nervous. They didn't bolt but started moving away through thick brush rapidly. I got my 32 ready and saw the deer from the right heading to an opening about 75 yards out. When she stepped out I held for the front of her shoulder and shot her through the neck and got a bang flop. That's when I saw the larger doe run across and realized she had two fawns.
Oh well no fool like a old fool and after 6 days and not another deer seen I'm not complaining. I used my 32 special with 170 gr Speer's over 30-31. I have always used Hornady flat points but they weren't available so tried the Speers and they worked well!
Also had a Pearson no drill scout mount with a Burris Scout scope. I just struggle with irons anymore and while not the same has the 94 with irons it has brought an old friend out of the safe. And I still have a week with a either sex tag to go.

Fawn's are tender! I may see if I can blood my .32 this weekend. We still have 2 days of no-permit doe season left.

I stopped shooting deer 16 years ago after killing truckloads of them. I lost my taste, but........that one you got looks very tempting for the frying pan.-----6

That will be a nice and tender deer. I'd rather have one of them little ones than a huge old buck for eatin wise. I know how you feel about open sites. I still use them but I have to keep my shots short.

And don't forget a few pieces of bacon thrown in the pan with the liver and onions. Nice pile of homefries, a side of fiddleheads........where was I.......?
Oh yeah, good job sir. Last deer I shot was with a 32WS.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

Re: Small Doe with the 32 Special
I can remember one evening on my 16th birthday, on the top of a mountain between Chicken and Eagle, gutting a caribou I had just shot. My dad reached in and hefted out the liver in both hands. Eyes wide and serious, he held it up and said, "If we take this home, your mom's gonna feed it to us!" and threw it as far as he could down the side of the mountain.Pete44ru wrote:.

That's kind of how I feel about it too.
I like the small ones - they taste better, and they are easier to pack out, too. If I am thinking I might end up short on meat, I will go for the biggest animal I can find, if I have a choice, but if i'm not worried about that, I'll take a younger one, and I would rarely pass up a small animal that presents itself in the hopes of finding a bigger one. For me it is all about food.
Besides, that one is not so small. A couple years ago, my younger brother shot a Sitka blacktail that was about the size of a medium dog. He cooked it whole - in his kitchen oven. He said it looked bigger when he shot it.

Once they loose their spots they aren't fawns any more - just small, tender deer!

Good job, Enjoy!
As far as heart and liver goes, they are always left for the varmints in the gut pile. when I get one.

Well done, having gone through the trifocals, surgery, and finely just reading glasses. I have optics or red dots on most of my levers. That will be some good eating for sure.

Re: Small Doe with the 32 Special
Ed how do you like the no drill mount on you 94? I may have to get one soon myself. Nice tender eaten little deer also.
Re: Small Doe with the 32 Special
I've been trying to do the same thing with my 32WS 94... but the deer around here have been nocturnal. Lotsa sign in the day time, but Bambi no show.
Re: Small Doe with the 32 Special
Hondo I like it, but it has a small field of view that you need to keep both eyes open to use. The Burris is a nice clear scope and I pulled the rear sight that Pearson supplies and the Williams is usable. Nice really and I have thought if I really love it in a year or so I will have this post 64 drilled for a XS mount and put the Pearson on a 94 big bore 375 that my son has. Or maybe just buy another.

My 32 WIN SPL sits in a safe while the deer frolic carelessly on the ranch, all while I do boring work in PA looking at the piles of cattle sized deer on the roadside hit the night before...

I can relate I worked in Washington for 5 months last year. First rifle season missed in 40 years.
