New Ruger #1

Post by Rusty »

Since it does have a Lever I thought someone might be interested in this. It seems from reading on the Ruger forums that Lipsey's will be the official distributor for Ruger #1 rifles this year. This is what they'll be making this year.

Jason at Lipsey's wrote:
Ok guys here is what I know for sure:

1A blue & walnut 22" 7mm-08

1S blue & walnut 24" 30-06

1B blue & walnut 28" 257 Weatherby Mag

1H blue & walnut 24" 375 H&H Mag

K1V stainless & walnut 26" 223 Rem 1 in 8" twist

Waiting for final spec on the RSI but either way you guys will be happy.

If nothing else Jason from Lipsey's is doing a good job of keeping people informed on what is going on.

There are several questions and I will try my best to touch on most of them.

First, these are the "cataloged" items for 2015. We still can do some "special" runs like we have done in the past. Caliber selection is not as easy as it sounds mainly because proof ammo has to be sourced for any caliber we do. Finding proof ammo in the ultra obscure rounds or wildcats is near impossible and not worth trying to pursue for the small amount of interest in them. Another factor you have to take into consideration is if we want to keep Number 1's alive, we have to make them marketable enough that a gun store will actually stock them and not just special order when someone happens to come in and want one. For Number 1's to be viable, we have to offer some mainstream stuff that dealers feel comfortable bringing in knowing there are way more people looking for 223's or 30-06's than 225 Winchesters or 308 Norma Mags. This is not to knock any one's favorite round and dream Number 1, heck I like the obscure stuff too, but as a whole we have to be realistic in what sells.

Pistol caliber Number 1's are something we have talked about. There is a good demand for them in the states that allow them for deer hunting. Those would probably be candidates for special runs.

Not sure about international business. I'll be talking to them at SHOT Show next week and can find out.

I feel confident that the wood situation will be much improved this year. Good wood sells more Number 1's than any other factor. Likewise, bad wood kills the deal more than any other factor! Ruger is aware of this and is taking measures to make it better.

Thanks,
Jason

Good wood on No.1's should be mandatory. Unfortunately I am very unrealistic. I want a 6.5X54 MS in 1-A or 1-RSI trim. Norma could provide proof ammo.

I also don't believe that the typical person interested in No.1's would want a 30.06 or a .223

I kind of agree; that's an 'unusual' and 'high-end' gun, and the folks wanting them aren't 'normal' (no offense - I like 'em too).

I'd like one in 375 Ruger or 375 Winchester.

Actually, I think there would be a GREAT market for them with a non-chambered, but rifled, barrel, installed, and ready for user or local gunsmith chambering.

.

IIRC, a 24" bbl on the .30-06 #1-S is a first - the #1-S has long had a 22" bbl.

In my definitely biased opinion the Ruger No.1's are about the finest hunting rifles in this country. I bought a No.1 A-B in 30-06 about 30 years ago and love it. It seems to me that having one shot seems to make you know were you put them.

Jason announced the RSI will be = Blue/Walnut in 6.5x55

He also said their may be more models released throughout the year.

Gotta love 'em even if they have stumpy little levers.

I was hoping that the RSI would be a 7X57.

I'm kicking myself for not picking one up last year I saw at the Reno Cabela's in 300 H&H.

But a #1 is still on my wish list.

Love Ruger single shots! When I was a teenager friend of mines father had a #1b in 30.06 and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It was my holy grail for 30+ years until a couple of years back when all the planets were in the proper alignment (I finally ran into the right one, at the right price, when I just happened to have the right amount of cash). I have not been disappointed, it shoots great, looks great, and I made meat with it the second time I took it out. I would love to get a 6.5x55 RSI, just don't think it is going to happen this year.

I must not be typical, because I've got two in 30-06 and would love one in .223 to go with my #3 .223. :D

I was actually looking for an older 1B in 06 a year or so ago !

And a 1V in 223 would be okay for a bench gun .

Funny you should mention the 1H 375 !

I killed these two in the 2013 season using my Ruger 1H 375 H&H MAG shooting the no longer made Nosler 260 grain Ballistic Tip pushed with RL-15 .

They by no means are the largest in the world but good representative for my area of central Virginia !

Incidently this is the second time I've owned this rifle .
I bought it from my now deceased gunshop owner friend about 12 years ago and almost immediately traded it to my friend from Doylestown PA's father for a Interarms Mark X 275 H&H MAG that he had stocked in some really nice French Walnut . Then 3 or 4 years ago his dad wanted the Mark X back so we swapped back . Month or two ago I let my 1B 338 Win Mag and my 1H 416 Rem Mag go to a friend , so this 375's will be my big thumper from now on .

I have had 2 #1s in 375 H&H. First one I had for a year or so then a buddy decided he just had to have it. Last year I bought another one and before I had shot it I ran into a deal on a 264 Win mag bolt gun which is lot more useful for me, so I sold it to free up funds.

I have one of the 1B 264 Win Mag's from the one year run they did 4 or 5 years ago 8)

I think that's the fourth or fifth 264 Win Mag I've owned . I've killed a veritable pile of deer with the 264 Win Mag cartridge .
If I were to get down to one #1 the 264 Win Mag would be the one ! If I were down to two of them it would be the 264 and my 1H 375 H&H

I guess I ain't "typical/normal"! :o While there are a lot of "newer" and "odder" and wildcat cartridges out there some folks have a favorite cartridge that is also a "classic" cartridge. I love my 30-06 and would love to have a quality single shot rifle in that caliber. I should be able to assemble a load that will shoot into 1/2" at 100 yds. with a premium 168 grain bullet from a nice Number One...

I thought about a .30-06 but when I was shopping for mine I found a .308 and went with that instead.
