Texas information if you don't mind me asking.

Post by bigbore442001 »

Ok. I am not trying to curse myself but if all things fall into place my wife and I are going on a three week vacation of sorts.

We're headed to Florida where she is going to her business convention while I will try to shoot a couple of feral pigs and ship the meat back to our place.

After that we plan to swing up the Gulf Coast and into the San Antonio area.

It has been over a decade since I have been to SA and the Hill Country. I would like to have my beloved wife see more of the world and this great nation while we can.

Right now my mother has been in the hospital due to a kidney infection. It may not sound like much but being diabetic along with some other issues created a large number of problems. I debated whether to go on a long trip with her but both my parents told me that you two may not have another chance to go on such a journey together for such a length of time.

They are right. Mom said I wished I could go along and I can understand why. So I am in the planning stages and trying to get all of our ducks in a row so we can have a nice adventure of sorts.

I was thinking of the usual:

Tour the River Walk.

See the Alamo.

Have a drink at the Teddy Roosevelt bar.

Go on a vehicle safari in the Hill Country on a wildlife park.

Go out for some sushi and tofu. Ok. Just kidding. I want to see if anyone is paying attention. Have some good Tex Mex or Texas BBQ.

Go hunt some varmints. I can shoot she can skin them. Wait. Just joking. She isn't against hunting but it is not her cup of tea. She won't go out in the brushlands although I'd love to myself. So any hunting may be out of the question although I would love it.

I have even entertained the thought of zipping across to the Big Bend Area but you would be surprised at how time can creep up on you. It would take a good three days to get home from that part of the world. So that part of the journey may be out of the question as well.

So. If I may ask. Any ideas? Thanks for any replies.

Tex-Mex downtown, Rosario's (often rated #1), Titos (this is Tex Mex), Mi Tierra.
Uptown on Broadway, Soluna is my #1, not Tex Mex, but Mexican food.
La Gloria in the Urban former Pearl Brewery complex is worth the wait.
Don't eat Tex Mex on the River Walk, but Boudro's and Saltgrass are great steaks, and the Landry's downtown is better seafood than the Landry's in Corpus.
Jim Cullen's Jazz Band used to have a great outdoor bar on the riverwalk, but now they perform at Bonahan's Steak House.
I mentioned Shilo's Deli on the other thread - they bring the home-brewed root beer around in a pitcher and refill it like iced tea.

a neat little place to take your wife downtown is Mad Hatter's Tea Room.
Great meals, scrumptious desserts and pastries. Their tamale salad is a feast of flavors.

Blue Star Brewery - food is decent but pricey. Next door, Halcyon Coffee Bar has good pastries.

The Missions are great, but if you only tour one, make it San Jose.

San Antonio Botanical Gardens is a must-see. Tour the grounds, and their greenhouses are phenomenal.
Nearby on Broadway, La Madeline is a great lunch spot and great bakery

The Buckhorn Museum (Hall of Horns) is a taxidermy spectacle.

San Antonio has a great Zoo.

Dury's Gun Shop. Nagels Guns (be nice and they'll take you in the back - it's amazing).

San Antonio Hot Rod Club often turns out at the Pig Stand (Broadway/north-end of Alamo St.) on Sunday afternoons.

Paris Hatters on Broadway is worth a stop.

Rudy's BBQ at Leon Springs is worth the drive, but again, real Texas BBQ are the markets in Luling and Lockhart.
If you make the drive to San Marcos (Aquarena Springs), you're only 20 miles from Lockhart, and Smitty's Market is the first thing you'll see.

I can recommend Shonto Ranch in Kerrville if you want to see some genetic bucks and a few exotics. (100+ miles west, Rock Springs and Camp Wood have larger game ranches)

If you make the trip to Kerrville, the original Mamacita's Restaurant is downtown at Water Street and Junction Hwy (TX 27).

You can also turn this day into a sweep through Comfort

Nothing wrong with the sushi. I'm always interested in that if it is well done.

Hard to beat the hill country, but it has been a long while since I was there last.

You want real Texas BBQ, go to Lockhart. Black's BBQ makes ribs and sausage that can't be beat. Right off the courthouse square. Can't say enough about Black's.

SA can be a fun time. The river walk was a great break from Fort Sam. Being from KY, I had to laugh when I first saw the river! We have storm drainage with more water flow. However, dry is dry.

what you didn't see, then, is the amount of water that gets held behind Olmos dam (normally dry) and routed underground when we have a Texas flood.
Image
this was a little one, though the elevated highway (US 281) at Hildebrand was under water
Image
this is where it comes back out a bit south of downtown

in the 1921 flood, all of downtown SA was under water

It sounds like a plan - AND, if you can stay outta the casinos, you might even have enough scratch to make it back North.

Please accept our prayers for your Mom - IME, sometimes diabetes can get out of hand.

All this time I thought Stevie Ray Vaughn was kidding about the Texas Floods. I saw the markers under the overpasses on the 410 that had depth marks! Understand now. Thanks, MK.

I looked at that thread and opened up the links to see for myself. Right now I am doing a lot of searching online for various things to see and do. Like I stated we may never get this opportunity again for a long time, if ever.

The prior North American rainfall record was Goldthwaite, Texas (north of Lampasas), 36" overnight in 1935. All that water went down the Colorado and flooded Austin.

That record was broken by Hurricane Rita in Houston.

I've been under 65,000' thunderheads that turned the day black at noon (and turned on the streetlights).
My house has had 24" rain overnight.
I was in Austin for 7 inches of rain in one hour.

The hill country is the limestone escarpment between the southern end of the Great Plains and the Coastal Plain.
All of our rivers are in the limestone and occasionally pop out on the surface.

This creek, Seco, and 5 other systems west of the Guadalupe, run for 20-30 miles on the surface, then completely disappear into the Edwards aquifer, and re-emerge from blue holes onto the coastal plain (just south of US 90).

that's the opening to a cave with a parallel creek underground, 5-10 times the size of the creek on the surface
If you want to see something like this, take the drive from Bandera to Tarpley and hike down Williams Creek
This is the blue hole where the Sabinal re-emerges, 20-mi south of highway 90, and just above this is a 10-mile dry sendero.

Our endemic river bass, along with long-ear sunfish, are the only members of the bass/sunfish family that will retreat into caves to survive drought.

The San Antonio, Comal and San Marcos Rivers all come straight out of the ground.
Here are the headwater springs of the Guadalupe, at Kerr WMA.

Here is a link to a program made here in Texas that shows some of the places to visit.
http://thedaytripper.com/daytrips/

I like the Riverwalk. It is really not too far from the

Here is the link to the game ranch that a bunch of us have hunted on when in that area. Richard Muennick is a nice guy and can help you hunt something if you want to. There is a .30-30 there that some of the fine folks from this forum donated to his bunkhouse so that kids could learn to hunt. It has been used several times by kids who would not otherwise have a chance to learn to hunt.

Hermann Sons Steakhouse in Hondo is great eats.
They have the only hamburger steak I would ever recommended to anybody - the house specialty Abe's Pepper Steak - stuffed with cheese, onions and jalapenos, and a great fresh salad bar
http://www.hermannsonssteakhouse.com/menu.html

If you're going that way, stop at Dziuk's (dyukes) meat market in Castroville for the best venison Alsatian dried sausage this side of, well, Alsace.
http://www.dziuks.com/shop/beef-pork-dried-sausage
Also Haby's bakery.

IMO, the best dried sausage in Texas is Riverside Market in Boerne (Bear Moon Cafe a block away is good breakfast).

More good information. There is a ton of stuff one can do in the area. I hope all of my ducks get in a row.
