SIXGUN, I RECOGNIZED YOUR GRAPHICS !!!

Post by Terry Murbach »

SAW the Keith/Croft slipgun in GUNS magazine column CAMPFIRE TALES. I instantly knew those were your graphics; YES !! What a great gun to see again and to think and ponder upon it's history. OH my...
Does the full cock notch work or is it slipfire only ?
Does the half cock notch work to load and unload the pistol ?
And it surprised me no end to see your real name is Jack Curro....and Irishman HUH ??!! Honest to goodness I thought your name was Sixgun I quess. L O L ! And after all these years to boot whoda thunkit ?

I've not been here in a while and see some missing names like Adirondack Jack....and Pitchy....the fellow at Steve's Guns who name escapes me as we speak....and the fellow out by Denver who did losts of intersting accuaracy tessting of lever guns. Dang...I forget his name too. I do hope all is well with them and they've been busy lately.
Hope you are okay too Jack !!
We've all been fine up here on the high northern Plains. A couple of months ago I got a HANDWRITTEN letter---how long since anyone has seen one of those?--- from some old geezer in the High Lonesome of montana who told me he had a 2ND GEN COLT 357MAG NEW FRONTIER 7 1/2" for sale at about 2/3 of what one is usually worth and was told I liked NF sixguns. HE WAS/IS RIGHT ! And now I have every Colt Nf in every BBL length in every caliber ever made by COLT...ALL but one, an NF 7 1/2" 38SPL, the rarest of ALL Colt SAA pistols with ten ever manufactured. Yep, got the second rarest of all, the NF 5 1/2" 38SPL all but NIB and shot the stuff out of it the day I got it !!!!!! YYEEEEEHHHHHAAAAAAAA...
All the best to you and yours, Jack.
And so it goes...

I noticed that the slip gun had it's trigger. Made me wonder if it still had it's full cock notch too.

Very cool piece, Sixgun.

Terry,
It's good to hear from you. :D John Taffin (as always) did a great Campfire Tales. I have to thank you personally as you told me that John would like to see that old Colt.

Another thing......I have ALWAYS been on your side as knowledge is king and BS sings. :D (hey, ya like that? My little Italian brain just thought that up.)

Anyway, I'm done with my 2 Cent job come May 2016 and my better half and myself are going to be cruising out your way with a suitcase of old sixguns (Just like Harold Croft did in 1928 :D ) and will pay you a visit.....whether you like it or not........and of course hit JT, and if there is time, I might even pay my son a visit! (Man, I gotta stop this but it's hard sometimes) and most certainly, got to pay Griff, Old Savage, and the grand Cowboy Tutt.....if you guys will have me.....yea, Olloger and of course, the beautiful Ms. Tammy aka Ms.Boots.....oh what the hell...even Blaine. :D

I have to show my better half the machine guns, silencers, .....all things "fun" that my great son has accumulated.......chip off the old block......that's a fine boy I raised......

My wife won't fly but I'll just have to hog tie her in the old Jeep and show her what a road trip is all about.

Your the best Terry and I'll see you next summer......for sure!

Jack

On the mechanics of the slip gun......Everything is like it was meant to be......full and half cock......perfect lock up and a nice 2 lb. trigger pull. When Sedgley built their many Springfields and Mausers, they learned a bit on how to take their time and do the job right.......and must have put their top man on this Colt.----6

Terry,
You got a 5 and 1/2" second gen 44 Spl?.....if so, can I have it? :D

Six, you pay me way, WAY too much credit. Way too much. If you think you can make it out to Commifornia to meet with Old Savage, our gang, and I (and Jim Williamson too by default) I'll scramble to meet with you any time at the L.A. shooting range, but thinking your time is better spent June 27th and 28th out in Hotchkiss, CO with Griff and I and a number of people at the Billy Dixon Line.

Working on another event over Spring Break in Hotchkiss, CO, no big deal, not an event, just shooting at the FoBD range with friends from March 30th to April 5th. Sometimes having the range to ourselves is better without the competition. Will keep you posted. It would be an honor for me, I'm not so hot a shot anymore with pistol, but not giving up just yet. Just making adjustments to the new glasses and prescription.

WHAT A WONDERFUL RESPONSE FROM ALL OF YOU BOYS TO MY NOTE TO JACK THE SIXGUN !!

I have two colt NF 5 1/2" 44SPL's, Jack, but both are third Gen guns. Both have been gone over by Ben and both shoot to beat the band I kid you not. The 7 1/2" 44SPL is also one fine shooting sixgun that makes me sorta have the feeling Elmner had shooting his 7 1/2" SAA long range sixgun.
As funny/odd as this sounds the best shooting of the bigbore NF sixguns may well be the 44/40's. My 4 3/4" and 7 1/2" are tackdrivers., with damm near any load and any 44-40 bullet including 200, 210, 215, 225, and 240gr LFN bullets. Used 'em in .427, .428, .429" and all shot just fine with the singulat load of 8.5grs Unique and later 8.5grs of UNIVERSAL. Have also tested the factory 200gr JSP bullets riding the wave of 16.5grs of 2400 and my U. '73 carbine shoots 'em straight as an arrow out to near the promised I swear. This latter load also shoots great in the 4 3/4" NF 44-40 sixgun.
The most incredible of my NF sixguns has to be the ultra rare 5 1/2" 38SPL that litterally shoots ANY 38SPL load into little itty bitty groups all on the same sight setting. In the four years now I've been shooting it I've never touched the sights and banged down everything in sight out at 50 meters. Where the front sight is when the hammer drops there the bullet goes precisely.
It was good seeing Nate Kiowa Jones post a response here. Do hope the levergun plumbinbg bidness is going great guns, Steve.
SO...are Adirondack Jack, Pitchy, hobie, etc still around here and posting ? Last I talked to Pitchey [ Lenn Davis ] he was going trought the trials of the darned in a nasty deevorse and did not want to talk anymore so we parted ways, hopefully for just a while as he is an teresting fellow. And I was sorta snarly too then and I do hope he can forgive my big mouth and bad disposition at that time. I prayed for lenn and I do hope it all settled on an even keel. Benn there done it know the feelings !!!
And so it goes...

Well dang, Terry. It is good to see you back. And in good form.

I'm sorry I can't join in the Colt sixgun conversation with you and Six: after I discovered that Ruger had perfected the design I just lost all interest in Colts.

Yeah, old Pitchy has to take a sabbatical every now and again. He is about due to get back here I would think.

Oh Earl....I HAD so much respect for you!

I've always been a big Ruger fan (still am). But years ago I went to the gun show, planning to buy a Blackhawk in .45 acp/.45 Colt. That dealer wasn't there, so I bought a Vaquero in .45 Colt (money was getting warm in my pocket, you know)
I had that revolver several years. But I finally found a Colt SAA in .45 Colt I could afford. The first time I shot it at 25 yards, it shot to point of aim and the group was well under half the size of the Ruger group...and much smoother action. The Ruger got sold and I have never looked back. I eventually got up to 4 Colts and now am back to 2. If I want to hot-rod the .45 Colt I have a Redhawk and an 1892 rifle for that.

So.....cabin fever makes Terry kinder and gentler? :D

Harold,
They did not. I'm just a peon factory worker.....but a peon with excellent connections. My bud at Targetmaster can have about anything he wants from the Colt factory......and he extends those privledges to me.

Not that it's all gonna make me wealthy, as I'm gettin old, but there will be some people down the road that will surely reap the benefits.-----6

Hey Cat....Thanks.....it really ain't no big deal.....I described it pretty good above.

My bud has about every military 1911 ever made, from everything Colt, Union Switch & Signal, Ithaca, Singer, and the latest North American Arms.

I'm personally just a regular guy who puts on his jeans in the morning and does a menial job at driving a forklift.

But....I made these connections through my diligence of studying the old guns since I was a teenager. It's been my life's passion and naturally other people pick up on these things and realize they can make money through my knowledge....that's fine and dandy......but......I need something in return. :D -----6

Well, if history is any indication maybe not the last part  but I sure would hope that Terry comes back here in a full time way. I actually have met the man once in New Mexico and he is as kind and humble as they come. He was really good to me in all our emails and in person. The same applies to Tom.

From Vancelw:
The first time I shot it at 25 yards, it shot to point of aim and the group was well under half the size of the Ruger group.
Not an unknown issue that the Ruger's were notorious for undersized chambers in the cylinder of 45 Colt single actions. A little judicious and inexpensive gunsmithing to uniform the cylinder at 0.452, recut the forcing cone angle at 10 degrees, and if necessary fire-lap the barrel and I would put a Ruger 45 Long Colt SA against any Colt.

Then again, perhaps with the same upgrades, the Colt would do equally well. Just sayin'!

No sense throwing good money after bad....With the upgrades/smithing work you mentioned, the Ruger would cost more than the Colt, which already out-performed it. :D

and dangnab it all .....the Colt is just darn pretty , case hardened etc and looks like the true originals..

i probably have more rugers than any other brand than winchester....... but unless you send them off and spend big bucks, they aren't case colored ' 'old west' looking, like the colts.

well, this is like deciding your favorite child.....dont do it and if you do , don't admit it.

Vance, I dispute that as depending on the cost and value of the Colt in question as compared to a new Ruger. I don't think you know much about gunsmithing costs.

I always tweak my firearms but that is just me. A cylinder reaming is so cheap as to be meaningless if you ask me. If you can't afford $50 dollars to pay someone to uniform your chambers or less if you buy the tools then do it yourself then stay home and stop whining about accuracy. Honing the forcing cone is also next to nothing for a qualified gunsmith like the late, great Bob Munden (RIP). And fire-lapping is something you do yourself with a fire-lapping kit from Midway or other sources. Probably $30 dollars and some reloads you make.

These same processes would also make your Colt shoot much better most likely. As to differences in cost between the Ruger and the Colt that would depend upon the color finishes initially selected IMHO.

Only one whining about accuracy is you. I know exactly what my Ruger cost and I know exactly what my Colt cost. And I've got a pretty good idea on gunsmithing costs. I stand by my statement.

Um, no, I can read your above posts and it was actually you who complained about your Ruger accuracy. I guess you have some pretty inexpensive Colt FA's then. Whatever works for you.

I still submit that uniforming your chambers, re-cutting the forcing cone and throating your barrel would only increase accuracy and not reduce it. Our own Jim Taylor was really good at this.

Regards.

Oh, that's sneaky, going back and editing after I had already replied.
Quote chapter and verse where I complained of my Ruger's accuracy, if you can. I simply said the Colt was better. So I sold one and kept the other. No gunsmithing required.
You don't have to always get the last word, but if you do, I suggest we take it to PMs so we don't get chastised (rightfully) for mucking up the forum and thread hijacking. TTFN

Good grief, I wasn't trying to be sneaky! I was in the process of writing a response to you and you responded to it, and I was rewriting mine!!!! I was just trying to be more honest and post how I felt! -Tutt

I do not understand your posts. A Ruger in 45 Colt generally sells for much less than an authentic Colt. The cost of uniforming a Ruger is generally much less than that of obtaining a genuine SA Colt.

All the improvements I have mentioned are cheap and would improve the accuracy of either revolver.

Doc O'Meara also had a 5 1/2" Colt NF 38-40 that I fairly swooned over. I do not know it's history nor what happened to it after Doc went home to the big range in the sky.
I ordered a new COLT SAA 7 1/2" 38-4 at least three years ago now and never EVER heard a word after that on it.
My Cimarrron 4 3/4" 38-40 shoots like a target gun though.
The ruger 6 1/2" 38-40/10MM has never been fired by me for reasons that escape me as we speak. Autta sell the damm thing and be done with it.

Terry,
Doc O'Meara passed over the Great Divide??????? Holy pelosi! When did all of this happen??????

Some years back Doc and I spent some time camping out and shooting. He was so enamored with a few guns that I had he took a mess of pictures.....one here with a lettered S & W Triplelock Target, which I do remember, that he shot a cylinder out of. Some of these pics went into his book....of which I cannot remember. He tried to get an old octagon barreled 1899 Savage in 38-55 from me....but I did pass him a handful of cartridges to blast at whatever we were blasting at.----6

YES.....NOW I remember....A few years later Doc asked me how in tarnation I got a NF in 38-40......long story but.......I did tell him it was a joke to take a 44 Spl., 44-40, 38/.357, 45 Long Colt New Frontier and swap out barrels and cylinders for the 38-40 and have the front sight brazed from the old barrel on to the new Colt barrel and that he could make about any kind of a New Frontier he wanted.

Get it? Did you notice how my picture only shows the "38-40" roll stamp but not the rest of the roll stamp? But.......I did have the right people do it!-----Jack

Gimme an address. I've had this too long. :D You and I have to get together next year when I get out of the rat race.----6

Hey Six, I sure enjoy your pics. And your perpetual "Can I have it???" LOL

Your a card!

I hope maybe some day we can meet up. I prefer a Ruger Bisley or maybe FA grip over all others and no other's need apply in a SA, even if original Colts. My bad, but true. But I sure enjoy the posts!

Hopefully maybe some day we can meet up. And I would like to meet Blaine too. You are both my friends here. Yeah, I know, after all these years we sometimes pee somebody off, but we always get over it because we are family. Dysfunctional family maybe at times, but still family. We always support each other in the end. If we don't, who will?

Regards my friend,

Tutt,
There are just some people that are magnets to me. You are most certainly one of those guys.....a guy I know who could live in my gun room without a worry about that guy even taking even a screw.

It takes a while living and deciphering individuals......I'm at 60 yo.....but my man....you are one of those fine fellows....even though we have never met.

I read all of your posts and by the Good Lord, I am determined to meeting you in person. (15 months to go....I can't wait)

Thanks brother...it's an honor to know individuals of your magnitude.------Sixgun

Yes, indeed - good to hear from you again, Mr. Murbach!

About a dozen years ago, I remember that you posted here fairly frequenly and kept novice handloaders like me out of trouble more than once. But what I have missed most is your curmudgeonly humor, if I may say so.

I still recall, some time before September, 2007, that one of our cousins from the British Isles joined this forum; and he's probably still here. I don't recall who it was, right now.

He introduced himself, and then our MR. MURBACH proceeded to call him a "limey" and told him what he thought about that long dead king who we revolted against and defeated and on and on. Great way to make a feller feel at home!

And, of course, it was in all CAPS, making it even funnier.

I laughed out loud, then sent a PM or post (don't exactly remember) telling our new member not to mind Mr. Murbach; he was (by the way) our Ambassador to Iran, or one of those countries who hate us intensely. ('Course, nowadays, just about EVERYBODY hates us EXCEPT the English and Australians. Even those running the show!)

Anyway, THAT was entertaining.

Best wishes -

John
