Safe bet powder to reload .30-30?
Guys, any advice on a starting point for reloading jacketed bullets in a Marlin .30-30? Is there a powder that is more likely to give accurate results than others?
Re: Safe bet powder to reload .30-30?
I have used W748 for a long time with great success. Recently I've been working with H332 that is working very well too. There are a lot of great powders for the 30-30. I even use Unique for plinking cast loads.

Hi,
I use Winchester 748 or IMR 3031 for my 150gr bullet loads. I find looking at reloading manual is of great help when forming my decision on powders. I bought the Winchester 748 because it was all that was available to me at the time, and have been using it for many more calibers also. Marlins 30/30's have been very accurate for myself, so you have many options for loading. I shoot lead round balls out of mine loaded with IMR 4227 for a quiet low velocity possum load. Just depends on what your intended target is.

I too use IMR3031 and W748. I only used 3031 for many years but noticed a few years ago the Lyman manual showed less pressure for the 748 loads. I switched to 748 for some of my older rifles and have been satisfied with the results.
That said, I still use 3031 in all my Marlins and my fresher Winchester examples. I just like the IMR's and they are less affected by cold than 748.

Varget,3031 are the two I use and find the most accurate in my guns.

That's why I switched from W748 to H332.OldWin wrote: I just like the IMR's and they are less affected by cold than 748.

Hard to go wrong with IMR 3031

It's hard to beat 3031 for versatility but Hodgdon's LVR powder gives the old 30/30 a whole notch upward in power, with good accuracy. But with my rifles I needed to give a max load (slightly compressed) and a good firm crimp with the Lee FCD to achieve that accuracy.nralover wrote:Guys, any advice on a starting point for reloading jacketed bullets in a Marlin .30-30? LVR will send the 170 grain bullets out the barrel at the same velocity you'd get with 150 grainers and the 3031 loads. And LVR seems to have been available all through the last two years of craziness and scarcity.

IMR 3031, IMR4320, BL(c)2, & RE7 are the only ones I've used. I've gotten my best accuracy w/near max loads of RE7.

I use a lot of H4895 in my 30-30. It is particularly suitable for "Youth" loads if that is a consideration.

IMR3031 and I would sure consider Varget.

Another vote for 3031.

I like to use 748 powder and Unique for light loads.

There are many powders that will work very well. In my experience, RL15 gives the highest velocity, and very good accuracy. I've also used a bunch of 748, 3031, Varget, and have done a little with LVR, though the jury is still out on that one. Haven't found any load with acceptable accuracy, and velocity has been mediocre at best.
