40 Years Ago Today...Where Were You ?

Post by PaperPatch »

40 years ago today, I picked up this issue at the Cubi Point chow hall. A few days later I was processing refugees. Doesn't seem that long ago....

Torejon AFB Spain. Five years before that, likely somewhere in the skies of SEA.

Won most of the battles, politicians surrendered.

I left Nam in Oct. 73. I worked 3 1/2 yrs. as civilian DOD employee. Worked Mechanic Cobra AH-1G Gunship Battle Damage Teams. Traveled all around I and II Core sites. Where ever needed. When Saigon fell, I was working Bell Helicopter Inc. I was in Esfahan, Iran. While there worked AH-1J Cobra Gunships. I miss those times in the 70's. Lot's history there, that I lived. I always muse that I closed 4 countries in that time!!! At 1 time I could not go back to them. Nam, Cambodia, Laos, and Iran. I miss Cobra Gunships, 1 fine Aircraft!!!

Living in that Hell commonly called Nebraska, surrounded by Minutemen missiles that Boeing planted all around the place.
I don't remember May 1, 1975 specifically, but I was in the short rows of 5th grade. I thought I remembered watching the POWS come home about that time, but maybe I was seeing re-aired footage triggered by Saigon surrendering. War was on the nightly news every single night, so it just seemed normal and I didn't pay a lot of attention to it at that age. Any movie that wasn't a western was a war movie and I couldn't have told you Vietnam from WW II from WW I. But I was very aware that we had nukes planted all around us and the centerpiece of our city park was a full sized missile.

I was 4-½ mos. home from 2 years aboard the USS Somers, DDG-34, formerly DD946! Tin Can sailors, closest thing the modern Navy has to the iron men in wooden ships.

My military duty was some 8 years behind me. On that date in 1975, I had just gotten remarried, relocated to Roswell, NM and adjusting to the experience of new family, new job and new environs. It was a trying, yet exhilarating time for sure. Yeah, time does fly.

Like Griff, 1st year of marriage - still blessed with the beauty!

Had finished VN tour in '67 (ASA, attached 11th Armored Cavalry Regt and elsewhere), served another year stateside, then shortly later put on a deputy's badge; met my bride when she worked in the courts. I was pulling bailiff duty at the time.

Let me see...Thursday, May 1, 1975...full load of classes in the second semester of my Junior year at the University, followed by ROTC until 8PM (remember the "what is going to happen now" from the entire class to the Commander), made it home around 9PM and instead of getting a couple of hours nap, tried to answer my wife's "what now" questions. Then went to my third shift job in the can plant...Friday, first class did not start until 10AM...so I managed a couple of hours of sleep before class...still did not receive any "what now" answers.

Until...end of semester and anyone that wanted to get out of ROTC could with no strings attached. They said that not all of us would be needed.

The best friend, I had growing up, had given his life for nothing on September 22nd, 1973...people forget that '72-'73 that we were still getting killed over there.

40 years ago:
1) had been on active duty in the Navy for only 9 months.
2) living on a ship at the 32nd St Naval Station in San Diego.
3) had owned my brand-new car for only 5 months.

Cheers,
