well I screwed the pooch...big time

Post by wvfarrier »

I was riding a broncy horse and he tried to rub me off on a tree. The tip of my boot caught on it and it literally twisted my leg around so far that I was thrown out of the saddle. Broke the fibula at the top and bottom woth spiral fractures. Not clean through thank GOD. And it's not a weight bearing bone but by darn.... it's sore. I am more concerned with the pulled tendons. Have an MRI friday. Wish me luck on that one.

At least I've still got 10 days of vacation left

I didn't break my leg... but did end up gettin' drug down a gravel road when a similar accident (@$#% rank horse) knocked me off by rubbing me up against a telephone pole!

Just take it slow and do what the docs tell ya!

That is true, but statistically speaking the horse mishap is about 10 times as likely as is the mechanical mishap.

Dang, my legs hurts just thinking about it. The first working horse I rode made straight for a low hanging branch that just cleared the saddle. I bounced better back then. Hope you feel better soon.

Ouch for sure! Get well soon.
On the MC vs.Horse thing, you don't have to feed motorcycle through the winter and the bike won't jump the fence in the middle of the night while you are sleeping.

I've ridden both motorcycles and horses. I prefer the horse but I'm biased. I grew up on horseback. Could ride before I could walk. With motorcycles it is not the bike you need worry about......it's other drivers.

Though I did manage to pick up my new winchester 357 mag today. I had to grit my teeth all the way there and get help to put it in the truck.....so worth it.

Whoa there pard! Just 'cause you're a farrier and know how to fix this type of injury on a horse don't mean you gotta shoot YOURSELF!!! Why there's comfrey grown all over that will poultice that up fine. And snag a bottle of that DMSO from the barn too.
Kind regards,

Spirals can be nasty. Prayers up. And if you think the fibula is a non-weight bearing bone, just wait till you try to put some weight on it. It will remind you real fast.

GOOD LUCK WITH THE MRI.....BEST WISHES AND HEAL FAST!

A WHITE HORSE NAMED MIDNIGHT TRIED TO DO THAT TO ME WHEN I WAS A YOUNG'N
I TRADED HORSES WITH A FRIEND OF MINE THAT COULD NOT HANDLE HIM....
HE RAN ME THROUGH THE WOOD TO SEE IF A BRANCH WOULD KNOCK ME OFF....
THEN RAN AT A FULL GALLUP ALONG THE FENCE LINE..AND TRYING TO DO THE SAME THING....
THREW MY LEFT FOOT ON HIS RUMP AND RODE HIM DOWN THE ENTIRE FENCE TO THE BARN.....
THEN HE SLAMED ON THE BREAKS TO TOSS ME OVER HIS HEAD....WHAT A RIDE!

Prayer for healing sent. Broken bones heal, but the soft tissue injuries hurt worse and longer. I have ridden horses a few times, and I am not even going to say that I am any good at it. I don't know anyone who has ridden a horse much who didn't get thrown or knocked off.

So, is it a weight bearing bone?

Seriously, glad to hear it's relatively straight forward. Heal fast my friend.

Hope you heal up fast, spiral fractures are hard to heal sometimes.

A lot of the boys where I'm from thought we were Stoney Burke and had to try our hand at bronc riding in the local rodeos. I guess I did okay, stayed my 8 at least half the time, was really more interested in the barrel racers than riding to be honest. Worst I ever got hurt was by a 3 y/o gelding our neighbor bought for his 12y/o son that was only green broke. Dad told him I'd take the starch out of him for them and so I saddled up and didn't have a problem for a minute or two and then the rodeo began.

He figured out pretty quick he wasn't going to unseat me so he slammed my left leg into the telephone pole corner post of the corral an then fell on the same leg before I could step off. I was still in the saddle when he stood up, I knew my leg was hurt, but I was so durned mad I proceeded to flatten his ears with a 3ft piece of broom handle Dad handed me. Several minutes later I couldn't feel my leg anymore and had Dad snub his head to post and I fell when I got off.

Both bones in my left leg broke in two places. I got to hobble around on crutches in a cast for the next several rodeo's....I got a LOT more attention from the ladies and didn't even have to spit out any dirt. :D Neighbor sold the horse cheap before I got the cast off. Probably a good thing...one of us might not have survived the next ride.

Ya it truly blows. It's been a week and I still cannot weight bear on it even with the brace. The edema and bruising hasn't subsided either. I shoe horses for a living and occurred just as I was to come off vacation. Good thing I had some savings built up
