Position Eliminated......... 1st time out of work...

Post by Old No7 »

1st time in 30+ years that I wasn't out on a vacation day, holiday, business travel or a sick day and I woke up this morning and didn't have to go to work...

My employer of 12.5 years eliminated my position yesterday in a "reduction in force"/cost-cutting move, and I now have a whole lot of time to be spending at the range or doing honey-do tasks coming at me.

Oh yeah... I do have to start the new job search too.

I was the last to join a very large corporate (and very political) team after moving over from a separate smaller operating division (where I was a valued key member of their small staff for 11 years); me being the new guy, with the lowest # of direct reports, and a different view on the type and level of service we should be providing that other division, I've known for the last 1.5 years that I was at some risk.

Oh well...

I have a loving wife and family, a decent severance package, Faith in My Lord, excellent skills & experiences and a very positive attitude (that this was meant to be, and there is a grand plan for me) -- plus my leverguns, and the whole gang here too. :)

Still, it's a kick in the butt and sucks big time...

I do plan to be OK -- heck, even better than before over the long run -- but I'm sure there will be some up's and down's coming over the next 6+ months.

Wish me well fellas. Thanks!

Loss of a job like that is for sure a stressful situation, almost as bad as the death of a loved one. I have been there myself and my son just got the pink slip a couple of weeks ago.

Still, it is possible this will lead to a much better opportunity, as happened in my case. Let's face it, when you are working you don't usually have time or inclination to look for a better position.

Opportunity knocks. Go answer the door.

Best of luck to you in your search.

Prayers for you to succeed, whatever that might be.

All of my post Army Retirement jobs went tits-up...the last time was at age 61....I decided to say "Bleep It" and just retired. It's a little more broke than I planned on, but I have no regrets, and exactly enough wherewithal to be just fine.

Sorry to hear No.7. Prayers sent and best of luck to you. At least the southern part of the state isn't as bad for job opportunities as up here.

Our oldest and middle sons have just recently got new and good jobs so it is doable.

You're right, you will be fine and end up better off my friend.

Been there before and may be in your shoes by the end of the month. Stay strong and remember what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, even if the outlook for a new job is bleak at this point in time. Prayers up and good luck.

That stinks!
Happened to me about 7 years ago. Turns out that my knowledge and
skills are in demand far more than I thought.

Enjoy the time off!

Had that happen to me, almost 20 years ago to the day... They asked me back after 6 years at a 25% increase over what I had been making... but still less than my current job... I asked for more, and to "tele-commute"... apparently they had their line in the sand!!! I don't know what I'd done if they said OK!!! :P

Be glad it's only your first time.

I listened to the "smart people" and got a degree... and haven't had a solid long term job in 15+ years. (lots of temp Labor... prolly more if I spoke spanglish...)

I don't fill enough EEOC check boxes to get even an interview in the career field suggested by the "smart people" living on the .edu/.gov tit... much less anything else I may be good at.

Thanks, "smart people"... Here's $60,000 of up yours...

I heard somewhere it's always darkest before the dawn.

I was laid off for the second time in 3 years from a job I expected to retire from, GM dealer parts guy. At 59 it was not a good time. Ended up commercial driving and after just a couple years of swimming upstream I landed a dream job with great pay and benefits. Now I hope to be able to pass my DOT physical at least until 68-69, planning to not take SS until 70. Us geezers can work circles around most of the young'uns and if you find the right employer they appreciate people that expect to do more than show up.

There is hope even if you have to change careers.

Thanks for asking... I have lined up 2 consulting jobs (short term) that will start in a couple of weeks, and I also meet with a headhunter next week. One prospect at a company 1-hour south of here is also alive and well. We'll see...

Also heard today from the TelComm person where I used to work (as she helped convert the cell phone # over to my own payment plan) that I was "Just one of over a dozen long-timers..." who were all down-sized that day... Company is making plenty of $$ -- just not making enough to please "the street"; if you know what I mean...
