Post by boolitshooter »

My wife and I will be traveling to Spring Valley, AZ on 9-2 from Early,TX to pick up our new puppy. She is a French Brittany Spaniel.
Any ideas on where to gun shop? We will be traveling on I-10

Few in NM are worth the stop, IMHO, being fairly scant on inventory. But here are a few if you want to have a look anyhow. Best ones are up in Albuquerque, but doesn't sound like you're going that way (Peterson's is excellent if you do go through ABQ).

Dona Anna Munitions in Las Cruces, pretty good store for the town. They do a lot of reloads. Always friendly when I've stopped in (been 6 months since I've been down there though)

Custom Cartridge in Las Cruces used to be the place for reloading supplies, but the panic buying really cleaned them out and then there wasn't a lot of reason to go in. They sell commercial ammo and guns too, but their inventory remained pretty light last time I was there maybe 2 years ago.

There are a couple pawn shops in LC too, but I'm not very familiar with them.

D & M Sports in Deming is a pretty good store on the whole, though a bit on the pricey side. Wouldn't have struck me that way in the 1990's, but then the internet went and changed everything  Good store on the whole though.

Nothing in Lordsburg or Wilcox AZ that I know of, thought there is a decent pawn shop in Safford (Firing Pin Pawn) if you take a bit of a detour or go up to Phoenix on US 70.

If you are going through Tucson, there are a couple shops in Benson, the bigger one never was open when I stopped by. Been 5 years though, he may have closed up. The smaller shop was right around the corner from the one on main street, ok for a hole in the wall place. Can't remember the name of either one I'm afraid.

I haven't lived in Tucson for 10 years now, but I still go into Murphy's Guns whenever I'm there visiting family. Almost as good a shop as Peterson's in Albuquerque, IMHO. Frontier in Tucson is also an excellent shop for such a small one. He's kind of the levergun specialist in town if there is one. There is also a big pawn shop down near Davis Monthan, IIRC, but I've only been there once and can't recall the name. Second Amendment Sports is a so-so store in what used to be Jensen's Custom Ammunition. Maybe I just think it's so-so because Jensens was a very good store

There are a few more in Tucson I bet, but I don't know them, they are either new or changed ownership since I lived there and was interested (in the 90's).

Probably tons of stores up in Phoenix, but I'm not familiar with the place. Used to run up there to go to a lumber yard when I had to and then get the heck out of there (never liked cities much)

Hi,

Didn't want to tromp on your thread on gunshops, but I've spent the past hour composing and trying to send you a pm about your French Brittany pup (all to no avail). I, too, have "reserved" a female from an upcoming litter in AZ--through Sun Country Bretons. If it's simple for you to send me a pm, I'd like to know which kennel you're getting your pup from. Since I'm the 3rd female "pick" from the litter, I think my chances of getting a pup are only about 50% and I'm working on a backup plan.

Thanks very much for any help you can provide. If you send a pm, I'll give you my impressions about gunshops in the northern part of the state.

I'd like to see that pup!
There are two Spring Valley zip codes in az, so I'm presuming you're heading for the one near here, which is at I-17 and hwy 69...

Coming through PHX, Legendary Guns is worth the stop. Couple rooms full of single-actions and leverguns and hundreds of others.
Phoenix is full of gun stores, just ask.
Spring Valley is just a hamlet 60 miles north and another 30 minutes up 69 gets you into Prescott Valley and Prescott. Prescott Valley Guns is a good bet for leverguns new and old, but drive into Prescott proper and check out Bill's trading post (first). Do not cuss or you'll be shown the door. Really.
High Country Guns is next door, and Bucky O'Neill Guns and J&G Sales are close in town also. Batterman's on Gurley has a small gun shop with honest stuff, and is run by Kurt Vogel. Lots of Ruger/Vogel family stuff. Check out the Palace on Whiskey Row and belly up to the same bar Wyatt and Doc called home. PVGuns and Bucky's and Bill's are Ruger employee transfer stores and you never know what you'll find in the cases...

Then go get your pup. 8)
I'm positive God created the universe... I'm just not convinced He had any choice in the matter.

Thanks all for the suggested stores to stop in at on our trip. We will be visiting a few of them for sure.

If someone would send me a PM with their e-mail that can post a photo for me as I cannot figure it out and using the "search function" I can't find it.

The 2 pics are of my new French Britteny.
Thanks.
